Mobile Apps for Mathematics Education Jesse Mackey

Quick Graph Quick Graph is an app that allows users to graph implicit and explicit equations in 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional images. Quick Graph can also display 2-dimensional and 3- dimensional inequalities. The app has settings for all types of coordinate systems which allows for a wide range of graphing possibilities. This app can also take snapshots of the graphs and can send them via or through the photo gallery. This app would be most useful in a Statistics, Calculus, or Algebra 2 course.

YourTeacher is an app that allows students (or parents!) to get some extra support when they are missing some information or not understanding concepts. The app has lessons that range from elementary level to college and standardized test preparation. The user selects their course level and then the unit in which they are studying. In each unit is a set of videos, each dedicated to a specific topic. This app essentially is a tool to provide a second round of lessons on any topic. It would definitely be a great support at home for parents who are struggling to support their kids with homework. The topics are broken down from the lesson video, practice, challenges, and self-tests. Since it is a free app, it could definitely save some money for parents considering hiring tutors. YourTeacher

Splash Math Splash Math is designed for elementary level students and has separate apps for each grade level. Splash Math is Common Core aligned and covers Place Value, Number Sense, Algebra, Fractions, Decimals, Measurement, Geometry, and the four operations. The app has three parts to it: Practice, Games, and Parents. The practice section provides a brief overview of a topic then has several practice sessions in which the user can execute sample problems. The Games section uses the same categories from the practice, but presents them in a more engaging way to increase interest. The parents section provides parents with a detailed performance summary of the child’s progress. It shows the worksheets complete, accuracy levels and a graph showing progress.

ArithmeTick ArithmeTick is a basic math facts app that helps to increase the user’s speed of fact responses. The app covers all four operations and has 5 levels of difficulty. Each round can be broken to include any combination of the four operations and includes up to three-digit numbers. Each round is timed and keeps score throughout the round.

Mathdoku+ Mathdoku+ is an app that combines mathematical operations with the strategy of Sudoku. The app provides different sized grids in each round. The size of the grid determined the available digits (a 3x3 grid only allows the use of 1-3). Each grid is then broken into “cages” which involve a certain number of grids, a designated operation, and a solution. Within these cages, the given solution must be reached using however many numbers as there are spaces. In addition, no number can be used more than once in a column or row, not just within the cage but the entire grid. The app provides hints for the user to check their solution before submitting for completion.
