4 th Amendment  Summarize the following in your notes in your own words:  The fourth ammendment states: People have the right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated and no warrants shall issue but upon probable cause.

Controversial Pieces of SB 1070  During a lawful stop, directs officers to determine immigration status of individuals who they reasonably suspect to be illegal aliens, and for all persons who are arrested.  Makes it a crime to harbor illegal individuals knowingly.  Authorizes officers to arrest an individual without a warrant if they have probable cause to believe the individual has committed any public offense that makes him/her removable from the U.S

3 Warm Up: 2/27 1. What images do you see in the cartoon? What do What do they represent? 2. What is the overall message of this political cartoon? 3. Do you think the author supports SB 1070?

DOL Review from yesterday:  Is SB 1070 amnesty or deportation? Justify.  Why was the bill created?  What are issues people have with this bill?  Are these valid concerns?

Today  Objective: IWBAT explain different opinions of immigration and analyze how media presents biased views.  Relevance: It is important to understand how the media may try to shape our opinion on any topic, including immigration, so that we are able to critically think about the messages we receive, and be independent when forming our own opinions.  DOL: Given an exit card with a biased view on immigration (with at least 80% accuracy) SWBAT Identify the bias and justify how they know this; Predict, what would the other side argue about SB 1070? 5

Review: Media Bias  What is media bias?  What does the media do to influence our thoughts?  Ignoring: negative traits/actions of a candidate they prefer positive traits/actions of the candidate they don’t like  Focusing on: Negative traits/actions of the candidate they don’t like Positive traits/actions of the candidate they prefer  How the media shows bias:  Flattering or unflattering pictures, facts, tone, opinionated “expert” guest speakers, emotion, etc.

Perspectives of immigration  Support legal immigration.  Support amnesty for those who enter the U.S. illegally (undocumented immigrants).  Believe that undocumented imm. have same rights of citizens -- (all educational and health benefits that citizens receive financial aid, welfare, social security and medicaid), regardless of legal status.  Support legal immigration only.  Oppose amnesty for those who enter the U.S. illegally (illegal immigrants).  Those who enter the U.S. illegally do not have the same rights  The borders should be secured LiberalConservative Who do you think is more likely to support the DREAM Act? How do you know? Who is more likely to support SB 1070? How do you know?

Fox News Video  As we watch the videos write in your notes:  What information does Fox News provide?  Why does Franks say people are boycotting?  How does Fox News present immigrants?  Why did he say Arizona needed to implement this law?  Think-Pair-Share: Do you think this is a conservative or liberal video? Why? 8

CBS News Video   How is Arizona governor Jan Brewer presented?  Who is given more air time, supporters or critics?  What is the overarching message of this video clip about SB 1070?  Talk with your partners about your answer to number 3. Is this message more liberal or conservative? Why? 9

Comparison of the 2 videos  How did the portrayal of immigration differ between Fox News and CBS?  Use specific examples of how language, images and who was being interviewed affected the message being portrayed. Think/Pair/Share  How might each source affect public opinion? 10

Washington Post Editorial The Post’s View: Arizona’s bad immigration law takes effect By Editorial Board, Published: September 20, 2012 AFTER A TWO-YEAR struggle, a federal judge this week authorized Arizona law enforcement agencies to require officers to check the immigration status of anyone they suspect is in the country illegally. Wearing the wrong clothes, speaking with the wrong accent or having the wrong skin color could land you in hot water in Arizona. The state’s “show me your papers” provision — one of the most bitterly contested parts of the obnoxious immigration law enacted in 2010 — is the second such measure to receive a green light from federal courts. The first was from Alabama, where a similar policy was implemented about a year ago. There, according to a recent report by the National Immigration Law Center, an immigrant advocacy group, law enforcement officers have created an “environment of racial profiling” that has encouraged private citizens to discriminate and abuse people they regard as foreign. The report, based on thousands of calls to a hotline, recounted instances of Hispanics, including legal residents, who were repeatedly stopped by police on flimsy pretexts and, in some cases, subjected to prolonged roadside detentions. Provide examples of this article showing a particular bias.

Forbes Say No To Amnesty “Comprehensive immigration reform” is a euphemism for amnesty. As such, reform will impose significant costs on the country. The primary effect of immigration amnesties in both the U.S. and Europe has been to attract more illegal immigration. An amnesty signals to potential border-crossers that if they can just get into the country illegally, they will eventually be given legal status. Illegal entries in the U.S. rose after the Immigration Reform & Control Act of 1986 went into effect and have increased fivefold from the 1980s to today. The vast majority of illegal aliens who have entered the U.S. since 1986 have been low-skilled, low-educated Mexicans and Central Americans; those groups will also make up the bulk of illegal immigrants most attracted by the current proposed amnesty. Mexicans, Salvadorans, Guatemalans and Hondurans made up 74% of the illegal population last year, says the Department of Homeland Security. Provide examples of this article showing a particular bias.

DOL  Complete the DOL by analyzing your source for potential bias. Identify the bias and explain how you know. (what does this source agree with)  Explain what you think the opposing side would say in response. This is your ticket out the door.
