 Ciudad Juarez is a shanty border town between the states of Chihuahua and Texas.  It is estimated that since 1993 more than 600 have been murdered.  Approximately 4,000 more women are still missing.  Many of the targeted women have been between the ages of and virtually all were maquiladora workers.  The maquiladora employers refuse to provide their female workers with more security to and from work and both the Mexican and US government deny the femicides as a type of organized crime.

In 1993, 19 women were murdered. In 2010, 73 women were murdered. Half of all the disappeared women leave at least one child behind.

The demand for employment attracted many young single women to the border from southern and central Mexico. 40,000-60,000 women migrate to Ciudad Juarez every single year. Most of the young single women that move to the border go alone unaccompanied by family, friends, or a male companion. The number one reason for their migration is for their independence through the use of monetary funds.
