Similes and Metaphors Can you find the simile in this poem? What other techniques is Sandburg using? Lost by Carl Sandburg Desolate and lone All night long on the lake Where fog trails and mist creeps, The whistle of a boat Calls and cries unendingly, Like some lost child In tears and trouble Hunting the harbor's breast And the harbor's eyes.

Extended Metaphors Read o’er the volume of young Paris’ face, And find delight writ there with beauty’s pen; Examine every married lineament, And see how one another lends content; And what obscured in this fair volume lies Find written in the margin of his eyes. This precious book of love, this unbound lover, To beauty him, only lacks a cover. Romeo and Juliet, Act 1 What is the face of paris being compared to? How many aspects of the comparison are there?

Mother to Son by Langston Hughes Well, son, I’ll tell you: Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. It’s had tacks in it, And splinters, And boards torn up, And places with no carpet on the floor— Bare. But all the time I’se been a-climbin’ on, And reachin’ landin’s, And turnin’ corners, And sometimes goin’ in the dark, Where there ain’t been no light. So boy, don’t you turn back. Don’t set you down on the steps ‘Cause you finds it’s kinder hard. Don’t you fall now-- For I’se still goin’, honey, I’se still climbin’, And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.

Metaphor for a family Could you use a metaphor to write a poem about your family? What are some things to which a family could be compared? A closet A library A building A toolbox Dishes, utensils, pots and pans

An Emotion Poem Do you know what the word “indifference” means? indifference is We can use a poetic form and the five senses to describe a word. (Emotion) is (color) It sounds like …. It tastes like … It smells like… (Emotion) feels like …. Indifference is water-stained gray. It sounds like hissing static on the radio. It tastes like overcooked noodles. It smells like a musty, closed attic. Indifference fells like a lukewarm bath in rusty water.

Your Poetry Assignment You can compose a poem using similes and/or metaphors You can compose a poem using an extended metaphor You can compose a poem describing an emotion in the format discussed. Your poem should be 8-10 lines long (unless you try the “emotion” poem, which has a minimum of 5 lines)
