Zombies can be so disarming…

Plan for Today  Review rhetorical situation  Partner work – rhetorical analysis  If time, we’ll start literacy narratives  If you were not here Friday, please get the notes from someone  REMINDER: Literacy Narrative starter DUE THIS FRIDAY!

Review: Rhetorical Situation  “Writing instructors and many other professionals who study language use the phrase “rhetorical situation.” This term refers to any set of circumstances that involves at least one person using some sort of communication to modify the perspective of at least one other person.” (Purdue OWL)  In brief, “rhetoric” is any communication used to modify the perspectives of others. When we encounter a rhetorical situation, we analyze the situation and design communication (oral or text) to meet the needs of the situation.  Remember, you already do a lot of this analysis automatically. If you are speaking with another person – perhaps someone who is grieving of sad – you adjust your language and tone to convey empathy and sympathy. If you are writing a letter to your grandmother, you adjust your language so that it doesn’t include texting abbreviations.

The Rhetorical Situation

Rhetorical Situation Analysis: Beyond Text  We can use the tools of rhetorical analysis to examine images as well as text.  We’re going to examine a couple of advertisements and analyze the rhetorical situation.

“We Can Do It!” – World War II poster created by J Howard Miller  Culture?  Context?  Author/Creator?  Purpose?  Topic?  Audience?

Repurposed:  Newsom, Jennifer, “This Holiday Season, Sexism Won't Sell.” Miss Representation.org Blog. WordPress. 1 December December (

With your partner, copy the following questions into a Word doc. Answer them together, print, and turn it.  Identify the culture and the context of this advertisement. (You can take a look at representation/ for some help with this) representation/  Identify the topic, audience, and purpose  What are the similarities with the previous J Howard Miller poster?  What has the author of this new advertisement done to adjust the picture to a new audience?  Considering what the original poster communicates, why do you think the author of the new poster decided to draw on Miller’s original?

Extra Materials for Review of Rhetorical Situation:  If you’d like some more review of rhetorical situation, please take a look at these:  (Introduction to Rhetoric)  (OWL in-depth explanation)  (A video from Clemson University on rhetoric/rhetorical situations)
