Imagery, Symbolism, and Atmosphere By: Emily, Sam, and Farhan

Imagery: Definition The formation of mental images, figures, or likenesses of things. Vivid, descriptive, language that appeals to one or more of the senses. Figurative language.

Imagery: Examples I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox and which you were probably saving for breakfast Forgive me they were delicious so sweet and so cold (William Carlos Williams, "This Is Just to Say")

Symbolism: Definition The practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character. Rhetorical Device

Symbolism: Examples From Things Fall Aparat The narrator and characters often compare Okonkwo to fire, he even has the nickname around town as the “Roaring Flame.” For Okonkwo, fire is a symbol of boundless potency, life, and masculinity. However on realizing his complete disappointment in his son Nwoye, Okonkwo has the realization that “Living fire begets cold, impotent ash.” Like fire, Okonkwo sees his own progeny as impotent.

Atmosphere: Definition Also called the mood, the emotional feelings inspired by a work. Often the opening scene in a play or novel establishes an atmosphere appropriate to the theme of the entire work. Compare with ambiance, above. Created through setting, voice, tone or imagery. Rhetorical Device

Atmosphere: Example "Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore," The Raven, Edgar Allan Poe
