Study Hall: Sit in assigned seats, working on something quietly.
Warm Up Nov. 18, 2013 1. Draw a density column Based on each liquid’s density, what order would these appear in the column if they were mixed together Liquid A has a density of 3.4 Liquid B has a density of .09 Liquid C has a density of 1.2
Share with the Class? Volunteers? Liquid B (density of .09) Liquid C (density of 1.2) Liquid A (density of 3.4) Density = how ‘heavy’ an object is, the amount of matter in an object (D=mass/volume)
Quiz Results and Tracking You will receive your quiz back along with a new tracking sheet Complete your new tracking sheet: Name and Block Number Objective: Electromagnetic Spectrum 6.P.3.2 Write in your score and color in the appropriate number of boxes
Interactive Notebook Review of notebook entries so far: you should have the following activities…… - 6.P.3.2 Electromagnetic Spectrum notes - Electromagnetic Spectrum Foldable - Frayer Diagrams (vocabulary) - Rainbow Activity Station - Ultraviolet Rays and Skin Cancer - Venn Diagram
Interactive Notebooks Notebooks were checked; grades were written directly on the pages (100 % - 50 %) Graded: Electromagnetic Foldable Frayer diagrams Rainbows Activity Venn Diagram / or Sunscreen Article Points were deducted for incomplete activities or if the activity was not taped/ glued in (no notebook or activity resulted in a 50% score)
Interactive Notebook Q2 Add entry to Table of Contents 6.P.3.1 Types of Energy (Energy Transfer) Assign the next number
Interactive Notebook Q2 Label Next Available Page: 6.P.3.1 Types of Energy (Energy Transfer) Number page to match Table of Contents entry Circle the number
Discovery Ed video “A Look at Energy”
Notes Today! You will take notes today in your notebook and on a graphic organizer 1st: You will write these notes directly into your interactive notebook
Write in notebook: Heat Transfer Energy (heat) can be transferred from 1 system to another or from a system to the environment in different ways (radiation, conduction, convection)
Write in notebook: Conduction If two things are touching … heat energy is probably moving by conduction. Heat energy will flow until both materials are the SAME temperature (reached equilibrium) Molecules or atoms collide to each other randomly and during this collision they transfer some part of their energy. With the same way, all energy transferred to the end of the object until it reaches thermal balance. As you can see from the picture, atoms at the bottom of the object first gain energy, their kinetic energies increase, they start to move and vibrate rapidly and collide other atoms and transfer heat. Conduction is commonly seen in solids and a little bit in liquids. In conduction, energy transfer is slow with respect to convection and radiation. Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity.
Write / Draw in notebook Examples of Heat Transfer
Write in notebook Conduction Energy (heat) flows throughout materials or across space from WARM objects to COOLER objects
Write in notebook Convection Heat travels through liquids and gases mostly by convection If something heated is rising or circulating in liquid or gas … probably convection.
Graphic Organizer You will receive a graphic organizer for the various types of energy Do not cut or fold the organizer
Graphic Organizer: Types of Energy Write the definitions for each type of energy on your graphic organizer in the top box Homework: You will also draw ONE picture to help remind you of the different types of energy in your notebook
Write on the graphic organizer Mechanical Energy Box when two objects push or pull on each other over a distance
Write on the graphic organizer Electrical Energy Box when an electrical source such as a battery or generator is connected in a complete circuit to an electrical device
Write on the graphic organizer Thermal Energy Box when a warmer object is in contact with a cooler one For example… Hot coffee inside a mug warming cold hands in the winter
Write on the graphic organizer Electromagnetic Box Radiation from the sun is energy which travels across distances by electromagnetic waves
Video on Discovery Ed “Heat Transmission: Conduction, Convection, and Radiation”
Write on the graphic organizer Conduction Box Heat traveling through solids when two things are touching (pan on a stove burner; heat from burner travels into the metal pan, causing the temperature of the pan to rise) Molecules or atoms collide to each other randomly and during this collision they transfer some part of their energy.
Write on the graphic organizer Radiation Box Heat moving across the space between two objects that are not touching (If you hold your hand over a pan or near an iron to see if it is hot)
Write on the graphic organizer Convection Box Heat traveling through liquids and gases in a circular pattern (convection currents)
Glue in notebook Glue your graphic organizer into your notebook Add entry in your Table of Contents and assign a page number: “Types of Energy graphic organizer” Homework: Draw a picture to represent each form of energy
