Non-Excepted Interstate – The driver will be operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) outside of Michigan for ‘non-excepted’ purposes; this is explained below. Excepted Interstate – The driver will be operating a CMV outside of Michigan, but only for ‘excepted’ purposes. Non-Excepted Intrastate – The driver will be operating a CMV ONLY in Michigan. Excepted Intrastate – The driver will be operating a CMV ONLY in Michigan and ONLY for an excepted purpose. Four Certification Types of Driving

Your Responsibilities A Michigan CDL holder must provide a self-certification of the type of commercial driving they will be doing (and medical certification documents, if required) whenever conducting a CDL transaction with the Secretary of State beginning January 30, Please consult the website for more details about the consequences of non-compliance. CDL holders who fail to self-certify by January 30, 2014 will be downgraded.
