Presentation transcript:

Do Now! Tuesday 12/4/12: Think of a character in a book you are reading. It can be a character from LOTF or a character from your SSR book. Describe your character using 3-5 adjectives (describing words).

What are some adjectives you wrote down? What the difference is between these descriptions?

Usually it’s easier for us to come up with the physical descriptions of a character. The author often tells us exactly what he or she looks like. It can be harder to come up with the personality or character traits of the character. To figure those out we really need to think about what the character says and does. You shared some character traits for characters in books you are reading, can you think of some other, general, character traits?

Adventurous, brave, courageous, active Angry, annoyed/annoying, irritated, exasperated Anxious, nervous, confused, scared, terrified, worried Arrogant, bossy, demanding, inconsiderate, impolite, spoiled, obnoxious, Stingy, cheap curious Weak Brainy, brilliant, intelligent, skillful, talented Lazy Serious Sly, crafty, secretive, sneaky, furtive Touchy, grumpy, cross Considerate, kind, generous, thoughtful Decisive, determined Independent, self-sufficient, resilient Lucky, fortunate Disrespectful, untrustworthy, unreliable Dependable, trustworthy, reliable Stubborn, persistent Dangerous, dark, cowardly

Now let’s apply those character traits to some characters that we know. On the next slide is an example I have done.

Piggy Physical Description Character Personality Traits Fattalkative Paleannoying Wears glassesSmart (book smart) Short Poor social skills, does not understand jokes or sarcasm His hair never seems to growFriendly, cares about the littluns

Now let’s do a few together!

What does this character do to make us think this about him? RalphJack Physical Description Character Personality Traits Physical Description Character Personality Traits

Now try it on your own: Now I want you to look in your SSR book and choose two of the characters. Make a T-chart for each character just like we did together and list 3-5 physical descriptions and 3-5 character personality traits for each of them. Then for each character choose one of the personality traits and write a sentence answering the question, “What does the character do that makes me think they have this character trait?”
