Conclusion Paragraphs How to write a great “end” to your essay.

Different Ways to Write Conclusions Just like the introductory paragraph, there are a litter of ways to write a conclusion paragraph. You need to find a conclusion paragraph that passes this test.

The Test… 1. The conclusion needs to be engaging and grammatically correct. (proofread!) 2. The conclusion needs to answer the questions WHAT? review the issue So WHAT? what have you said about the issue? 3. Make a reference back to the hook. 4. The conclusion sums up the thesis again but uses new words and ideas. It’s ok for the conclusion to be short but it must pass the test!

Rule 1: The conclusion must be engaging and grammatically correct. Don’t be lazy! If your conclusion is boring or you were too lazy to make sure that it was written correctly, then you will leave a bad impression with the reader. You want to end on a strong note. Proofread! Proofread! Proofread! Check your essay writing cheat sheet!

Rule #2: The conclusion needs to answer the questions: what? So what? Don’t hide the point you are trying to make! Drive the point home! What are you trying to say? Why is it important? Do this by referring back to the issue that you stated in the intro (Aren’t you glad we spent so much time figuring out the Task, Issue and Purpose from the prompt?!?!)

Rule #3:If you can, refer back to the hook in some way. Don’t leave the reader hanging. If you started with a great hook, pull it back in the conclusion. This gives your essay a sense of coming full circle. For example, here’s a hook for “The Most Dangerous Game” In this world, sometimes the hunter becomes the hunted. Now, here’s the conclusion sentence that refers back to the hook. While it would be better to be the hunter, being the hunted allows a character the chance to be more sympathetic.

Rule #3: Refer back to whichever hood you used: Strong opinion The effects of the death of Michael Brown have resonated across the nation. Quote John F. Kennedy once said “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” Strong Opinion From St. Louis to New York to Nashville, Michael Brown’ s death has been cause for discussion and change. Quote In retrospect, the people of this nation have more say than they think they do when it comes to voting. Americans can make big changes for their country.

Rule #4: The conclusion sums up the thesis again but uses new words and ideas. DON’T REPEAT THE THESIS. Find a new way to say what you are explaining. Your conclusion should look different than the intro.

It’s important to love your conclusion!

Final Thoughts: Use your thesis statement as part of your conclusion. it shows that you stayed on topic and you are wrapping it all up. Vary your words in the essay. Teachers tend to like students who use expanded vocabulary in the conclusion. Always be sure to review your essay after it is complete. Check if you have the proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Always make sure you try and keep relevant information in the conclusion. Also try to tie back into your thesis statement in order to show the reader that you know how your reason fits into the topic of the essay. Avoid speaking in the first person in a formal essay, it sounds unprofessional. Don't say "I believe" at any point, for it makes your points seem weaker. Summarize your essay to get a good grade.
