Today’s Goal Provide an update on IHL guidelines including admission requirements, Academic Common Market (ACM) and available resources Provide an overview of dual credit/dual enrollment in Mississippi’s CJCs and IHLs to include changes made to § in the 2012 Legislative session and the MS Virtual Community College (MSVCC)

Admission Requirements Complete the College Prep Curriculum (CPC) with a minimum 3.2 high school grade point average (GPA) on the CPC; OR Complete the CPC with a minimum 2.5 high school GPA or a class rank in the top 50 percent and a score of 16 or higher on the ACT* (Composite); OR Complete the CPC with a minimum 2.0 high school GPA on the CPC and a score of 18 or higher on the ACT* (Composite); OR Satisfy the NCAA standards for student-athletes who are “full-qualifiers” under Division I guidelines. * In lieu of the ACT scores, students may submit equivalent SAT scores.

IHL Summer Developmental Program A nine-week intensive program that concentrates on high school subject areas (English, Reading, and Mathematics) That are applicable to success in first-year college courses.

IHL Summer Developmental Program (SDP) Students who do not meet the criteria for regular admission are nonetheless eligible for admission. Such students must participate, however, in an on- campus placement process at the university of their choice. The process will determine whether the student may be enrolled in regular freshman-level courses in the Fall semester or required to enroll in the summer semester with mandatory participation in the Summer Developmental Program. Successful completion of the Summer Developmental Program entitles the student to continued enrollment in the Fall semester at the university of his or her choice.

IHL Summer Developmental Program Grant (SDPG) Must be a legal resident of the State of Mississippi Must be under the age of 21 at the time of application Must not have earned 24 or more credit hours at a college or university Must have been accepted into the Summer Developmental Program (first time attendee) at an eligible Mississippi public four-year institution eligible Mississippi public four-year institution Must be eligible to receive federal student financial aid and demonstrate financial need Must complete the online application and submit all supporting documentation by the deadline

IHL Admissions Application Process

Academic Common Market The purpose of the Academic Common Market (ACM) is to share between states specified academic degree programs located at southern public colleges and universities. This is accomplished through an exchange of students across borders at in-state rates.

To qualify you must: Be a resident of Mississippi. Select a program eligible for Mississippi residents. Complete the admission process at the institution offering the eligible Academic Common Market program. Be certified as a resident of Mississippi by the ACM coordinator for Mississippi.

Participating States The states of Florida and Texas participate at the graduate level ONLY. The state of North Carolina is currently not actively participating.

CJC Academic Eligibility Criteria Recommendation Option 1 Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale on all high school courses and Successful completion of 14 core high school units and/or junior status and Written recommendation from school principal or guidance counselor

CJC Academic Eligibility Criteria Recommendation Option 2 Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale on all high school courses and A minimum composite ACT score of 30 or the equivalent SAT score and Written recommendation from school principal or guidance counselor

CJC Academic Eligibility Criteria Recommendation Placement tests (ACT, Compass, ACCUPLACER, etc.) used to determine college-readiness for placement Dual Enrollment – student’s can earn up to a semester's worth of college credit in high school (semester’s worth = 15 college credit hours) Dual Credit – unlimited number of college credits

IHL Academic Eligibility Criteria Recommendation Complete 14 Core Units (minimum) and/or Junior status 3.0 GPA (all courses) 30 ACT or equivalent in absence of 14 core units & 3.0 GPA OR 3.5 GPA in all courses Appropriate ACT/ SAT (or equivalent) scores for placement

IHL Academic Eligibility Criteria Recommendation 3-12 credit hours per term recommended as long as a B average is earned in 1st two approved courses Institution & district can waive maximum or minimum based on sufficient student academic information District/school & Institution student approval agreement (or recommendation)

CJC CTE Eligibility Criteria Recommendation Criteria for eligibility is determined by each college Memorandums of Agreement must be signed with local school districts Must meet the same admission criteria as a traditional students Written recommendation from school principal or guidance counselor

College or University Decides Course pre-requisites Placement (for college-readiness) Instructor Teaching site Teaching schedule Tuition & fees (sometimes negotiable)

Academic Dual Credit Course Offerings CJCs – 62 courses approved by all 15 community colleges IHL – courses in articulation agreement Courses within the academic general education core No developmental education courses Dual Credit courses can NOT replace SATP – Biology I, Algebra I, English II, and U.S. History

Application of Courses There is no longer a need to develop course content equivalents between high school courses and college courses LEA’s shall determine how to apply Carnegie Units earned through dual credit courses towards high school graduation requirements based on the content area of the postsecondary course

Beginning July 1, 2012 Existing Dual Credit/Dual Enrollment Program stays the same with one exception –One (1) 3 hour course is equal to one (1) high school Carnegie unit (Section (13)) NEW Mississippi Works Dual Enrollment- Dual Credit Option –Section (19) –Section (1) (a)

MS Works Option Program jointly developed by LEAs and CJCs (not IHL) for potential or recent high school student dropouts (at-risk students) Students are dually enroll in their home high school and a local community college in a dual credit program Program consists of high school completion coursework and a credential, certificate or degree program at the community college

MS Works Option Upon student completion, the MS Department of Employment Security shall assist students in job placement Implemented statewide in the 2012 – 2013 school year and thereafter SBE and the local school board and community college shall establish individualized program criteria

MS Works Option No charges to students for community college course tuition/fees (students responsible for transportation) Grades & college credits are recorded on both HS Diploma & CC Transcript SATP courses are eligible for dual credit Courses include career, technical and degree program courses

Distance Education The Mississippi Virtual Community College (MSVCC) is a consortium of Mississippi's fifteen (15) community colleges Through the MSVCC, students may take courses from community colleges anywhere in Mississippi while getting support services from a local college
