Legal Aid for Key Populations Robert Akoto Amoafo Ag. Executive Director Human Rights Advocacy Centre Gender Capacity Building Workshop GHANET

Presentation Order  Background of the desk  How it operates  Challenges  The way forward

LADfKP  Was set up under a UNAIDS project to provide FREE CONFIDENTIAL legal assistance to Key Populations in Ghana as part the UNAIDS support to the HIV and AIDS national response.  The desk started in January, 2013 and ended in October, 2013.

Why LADfKP  Only medical and counseling services  Vulnerable nature of KPs  Unprofessional way of handling cases by some institutions  Lack of knowledge of laws around KPs  Discrimination  The legal status of KPs

What is done with LADfKP  Legal consultation  Legal representation through PBLN  Human rights and legal education  Research

How does the LADfKP work  Walk into our office/ call the desk  Meet legal team and human rights officers who will hear your complaint  The legal team will advice on the next course of action(eg, initiate investigation, file cases in court, conduct a mediation,, provide representation and make referrals if appropriate )  Some legal fees may be waived upon assessment of reported case

The way forward  LADfKP has been attached to the Human Rights Clinic of HRAC to continue providing the service  Funding to continue education  Involving KPs to do Legal Work

Thank you
