Who Am I As An Artist? How Are The Arts A Part Of My Life? Fianna Moe

The Roots My grandparents came from Samoa to share their culture with everyone. They were entertainers. The siva and fire knife is a Samoan performing arts dance. My grandma was a dancer at Waikiki’s popular Polynesian show, “Tihati’s” and the old “Hawaiian Hut”. My grandpa worked as a fire knife dancer and performed with Hawaii’s well known singer, “Danny Kalikini”. Artifact 1: This is a picture of my grandmother in the mid 70’s at the Hawaiian Hut show.

This is a photo of my family’s Polynesian halau in the late 70’s: My father is on the far left, my grandma is the middle women, my aunt ( grandma’s sister) is on the far right, My uncle ( grandma’s brother is the 3 man from the left, and my uncle ( father’s brother) is the boy on the left.

Performing Arts in Elementary 1st grade - May Day Princess- performed a Hawaiian waltz to the entire school. 3 rd grade- Participated in the school’s speech festival- performed a memorized short poem to different classes. 4 th grade- Member of the church choir and performed in the Christmas play. 5 th grade- Joined the school’s choir. 6 th grade- 3D drawing (buildings, chairs, etc) When I was in the third grade this is a similar poem that I recited at the speech festival. Messy Room by Shel Silverstein Whosever room this is should be ashamed! His underwear is hanging on the lamp. His raincoat is there in the overstuffed chair, And the chair is becoming quite mucky and damp. His workbook is wedged in the window, His sweater's been thrown on the floor. His scarf and one ski are beneath the TV, And his pants have been carelessly hung on the door. His books are all jammed in the closet, His vest has been left in the hall. A lizard named Ed is asleep in his bed, And his smelly old sock has been stuck to the wall. Whosever room this is should be ashamed! Donald or Robert or Willie or-- Huh? You say it's mine? Oh, dear, I knew it looked familiar!hanging

Artifact 2: My very first performance: 1 st grade May Day waltz. A similar poem I performed for the speech festival In 6 th grade my favorite thing to draw was 3D buildings and creating details by making it into a busy city.

Performing Arts in Intermediate 7 th grade: Art Class- sponge art, air brush, ceramics, collage. 7 th grade: Music class- lip sync and performed a music video using props “There She Goes”. Watched “Fiddler on the Roof”. Learn about conducting songs-national anthem. 8 th grade: Assembly officer election speech- I ran for school secretary and had to recite a persuasive speech to the entire school. 8 th grade: School Assembly officer election speech- Vice president speech.

“ There She Goes” There she goes There she goes again Racing thru' my brain And I just can't contain This feelin' that remains There she blows There she blows again Pulsing thru' my vein And I just can't contain This feelin' that remains There she goes, there she goes again She calls my name, pulls my train No-one else could heal my pain And I just can't contain This feelin' that remains There she goes There she goes again Chasing down my lane And I just can't contain This feelin' that remains Artifact 3: 7 th grade music class, my very first music video performance was the popular 80’s song “there she goes”. I also experienced and watch my very first musical movie. I still remember the songs that was sung in the movie. Please click on this website and check it out such a great musical.

Performing Arts in High school 9 th -12 th grade: Participated and performed a homecoming skit and dance to entire school. 10 th -12 th grade: Softball thanksgiving skit- perform a short skit, dance, or song to softball teams. 12 th grade: Peer Ed program: perform skits, short plays, sing to different classes and schools about peer situations. 12 th grade: Senior Assembly: Sing and performed with friends the song “underneath it all”, to the entire school.

Artifact 4: Every year my high school holds a weekly homecoming event where each class performs a skit, a dance, create a float, decorate class section, design a class banner, participant in daily dress up’s, and compete in recreation games. We begin our homecoming event by hosting and participating in the annual bon fire to celebrate the upcoming festivities. I was a active participant in the homecoming skit and dance. My class and I were the first freshman’s to ever win the homecoming trophy and we continued to win the spirit trophy throughout the years.

Performing Arts in Adulthood Hula: danced in front of an audience. Polyfest: UH Manoa’s PolynesianFfestival- performed a siva to a college audience, performance was taped and aired on the Olelo t.v station. Speech 151: recited plays, songs, and dances to classmates. Ali’I Catamaran: Polynesian dance performance Artifact 5: My first real job was at the Ali’I Kai Catamaran where I was a hostess and a performer ( Hula, Siva, and American dance). I learned about professionalism, such as customer service and proving them with the most memorable experience.

My Strengths Although I know that I am not the best in everything, I am very comfortable and confident enough to try something once ( sing a song, perform a dance, draw a art work, recite a poem, etc). I believe that I have strong team work skills, such as learning to collaborate and work together with others. Also, learning about peoples strengths and weaknesses and how to use their skills. My Goals my goals as a performance art teacher is to teach students to use their highest potential. I want to find each student’s strengths as well as their weakness and encourage them to embrace it. For example a student is skilled graphic artist but is a shy performer. I would use this student’s ability to help decorate and design props or have them create the customs. Put On Your Game Face

Steps That Will Help Me Achieve My Goal To achieve my goal the first thing I would have to do is to get to know my students and to build a positive relationship with each and everyone of them. I think that knowledge is endless. Therefore, I believe that it is important that I continue to learn more about the arts and how to embrace both modern and tradition teaching skills to create the best teaching approach for my students. I also feel that learning how to maintain team work will allow me to achieve my goals. For example, asking colleagues, professors, students, parents, and the community for more resources to use, for help when it is needed, and feedback on my teachings. I also that it is really important to get their support in what I want to do.
