Leadership – Coaching & Healthy Conflict

Identify and clarify issues Solve problems Commit to action Develop skills, motivation, confidence and self-esteem … … and that includes the people doing the coaching…! Coaching helps us to “My boss helped me to stretch myself.”

Traditional Management Boss feels in control, performer feels none Performer wonders if he has a choice Both feel involved but it may be slow Performer feels obliged or dumped on Dictates Persuades Debates Abdicates Effect on each Boss’s Behaviour Whitmore, 2011 Boss - the illusion of control Performer - the illusion of responsibility

Coaching Leader KNOWS what’s going on Performer CHOOSES to take responsibility Whitmore, 2011

Time? If urgent / crisis – OK. Do it yourself, or tell them what to do… But beware of self inflicted crises! Quality? Coach for high awareness and responsibility. Learning? Coaching optimises learning and retention. When to coach? Depends on the focus…

Coaching skills ListeningQuestioningReflectingClarifying

G – GOAL: What do you want? R – REALITY: What is happening now? O – OPTIONS: What could you do? W – WILL: What will you do? GROW steps 20
