Fiber, Ribbon Production and Cryo Update Alan Bross Tracker Phone October 26, 2006

Mirroring Status  Ribbon Mirroring continues. 47 runs have been mirrored u Mean R = 76% RMS=4%

Mirroring Status  From Eileen u All fiber prep work is complete s Cutting s Inspection s Polishing u Approximately 47k fibers sputtered (mirrored) (about 2/3) u The expected rate from now is about 6000/week s Finish 2 nd or 3 rd week of November

Waveguide Fiber QC  The setup for WG fiber QC has been assembled and the first measurements have been made. u So far so good u Will try to get measurements done before WG production starts = 8.8 m

New Ribbons  Roger Hare has been here for little over a week u Has been prepping fiber u Measured molds and confirmed number of grooves and pitch  Production Ribbons u Two are complete s Center fiber marking works well s Some minor tweaks to adjust glue s Third ribbon started u Need to revise schedule s Lost time due to collider shutdown s Will try to update soon

Cryo (from Russ)  Production cryostats: u We received 2 of the 8 invar envelopes from Ability today (Wednesday). 1 of them is perfect. 1 of them has a (estimated 0.1") twist/warp in it that requires some remediation. The dummy dimensional cassette can only be inserted half the way in. Russ is visiting Ability on Thursday morning with the envelopes and dummy cassette to discuss the problem and remediation plan. u Soldering on the OFHC copper foils is complete. Next step is to assemble them to the links. u We are procuring two racks and some of the components for the cryo/DAQ controls racks. u Work on the lid preparation is continuing with lid heaters, instrumentation ports, etc.

Cryo II  Magnetic field and lid controls: We are going to mount the lid control box on the front of the cryostat furthest from the magnetic field. The temperature controller should be fine in the magnetic field component. We have a lid alarm relay and over temperature device that is a relay type device. It is uncertain whether these will need to be moved out of the box. Maybe some testing can be done ahead of time. It is not difficult to move them to the main controls rack.

Cryo III  Prototype cryostats: u Cassette #112 was pulled and inspected. The foam was in place on the upper end. Cassette 112 and 105 were swapped so now cassette #112 is in slot 1 and #105 is in slot 2. u The thermal clamping bars were modified by insetting a row of stainless steel ball bearings on the contact surface. This lessens the contact area against the envelope and thermal link and should be beneficial in decreasing heat loads. u The cryostat cool down was started last Friday and it was cold on Monday. s The cassettes temperatures are good. #112) 7.53 K and #105) 7.00 K. –Heat load estimate: 60 W & 4 W. s Extrapolating to 50 Hz operation, cassette temperatures would be: #112) 7.8 K and #105) 7.3 K. Which is acceptable. We have sufficient margin. s The thermal clamping bar modifications will be carried forward to the production cryostats. Also the thermal interface improvements of indium tape, invar washers at cryo-cooler connections, and torque specs will be done. s There may have been some temperature calibration issues with the reported cassette temperatures for the September/October 2006 period. This was due to AFE board issues.

VLPC Cassette 112  The first new VLPC cassette in 5 years was assembled from R&D grade VLPCs (HISTE VII) produced in  First results look encouraging

Cassette 112  LED data from 64 channels from module 6 superimposed u Gain equivalent to D0 low-gain cassette u Distribution not Poisson s Curious  Much more to do, but there is promise that this cassette will be acceptable for MICE u One less we will have to pry away from George
