What is new and exciting at the ITU? David Wood ITU, EBU

Terrestrial UHD-1 is on trial with DVB-T2

11/13/20133 UHD means more than better images 3

Television ‘beyond HDTV’ 3DTV is important - but with current 3D TV screens it is less successful that expected. UHD-1 – ‘8Mpixel resolution’ for the next decade. UHD-2 – ’32Mpixel resolution’ for the following decade. Basic signal formats agreed, but many issue still to resolve – production, broadcasting recording, and more

Sound ‘beyond surround sound’ The viewer’s experience with very large TV screens will be improved if he can locate the direction the sound is coming from. Large screen TVs of the future will need “3D sound” Should the system use a large number of loudspeakers in fixed positions, or adapt itself to whatever speaker positions you have in your room? We are close to a flexible solution.

New ways to ‘measure’ television In the past we found ‘image’ and ‘sound quality’ by ‘subjective evaluations’ or ‘objective measurements’. New systems quality is not just ‘noise’ or ‘interference’. Need new ways to find the overall ‘quality of experience’ Many elements needed such as ‘ degree of eye fatique’, ‘sense of reality’, ‘enjoyment’. New options under study

A multimedia experience?

New Features for television Processing power of TV sets rises. TV sets can be connected to Internet. Internet delivered content can provide many additional features for the viewer. There are, alas, many different systems in the world for ‘hybrid’ or ‘integrated’ TV. We can try for some common elements such as synchronisation of content.

New ways to help those with disabilities Population is ‘aging’ Over 5% of population has disabilities today, will reach over 10% in coming years. Such people most need TV and radio to be connected to society. Many exciting technical tools to help them. Subtitles, audio descriptions, signing, speech rate control, clean audio. How will such services be funded?

Time HDTV 200 Hz HD 3D HD HbbTV SMART TV 4k 3D no glasses “print” media revolution Smart Phone & Apps 8k 3D Audio

The real problem of the future Many new options for the future of both radio and television. How can we predict which will be successful and which will not be successful? We are entering the age when it is more difficult to predict WHICH will be successful than to know how to make them.
