Questions / Comments / Concerns On the back bulletin board are questions, comments and concerns all ten sections of my classes have about health insurance… What are your insurance needs as a teenager?! Why do we need insurance? Why is it so expensive? Why do people get denied coverage? How can we help people without insurance? …Canada??!!!

READ THE ARTICLE INTRODUCING THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT. ON THE BACK ON THE PAGE – ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THIS WORKSHEET ‘MAY BE’ TURNED IN FOR CLASSWORK CREDIT Worksheet / Today’s Activity

What is the Healthcare Marketplace? How can I get health insurance ? m/watch?v=XOkPAANg 3R8 m/watch?v=XOkPAANg 3R8 Are you confused?! What terms did you not know?

What is the Affordable Care Act? “The Affordable Care Act puts consumers back in charge of their health care. Under the law, a new “Patient’s Bill of Rights” gives the American people the stability and flexibility they need to make informed choices about their health.”

What can it do for you? Coverage:  Ends Pre-Existing Condition Exclusions for Children:  Health plans can no longer limit or deny benefits to children under 19 due to a pre-existing condition.  Keeps Young Adults Covered:  If you are under 26, you may be eligible to be covered under your parent’s health plan.  Ends Arbitrary Withdrawals of Insurance Coverage:  Insurers can no longer cancel your coverage just because you made an honest mistake.  Guarantees Your Right to Appeal:  You now have the right to ask that your plan reconsider its denial of payment.

What can it do for you? Costs:  Ends Lifetime Limits on Coverage:  Lifetime limits on most benefits are banned for all new health insurance plans.  Reviews Premium Increases:  Insurance companies must now publicly justify any unreasonable rate hikes.  Helps You Get the Most from Your Premium Dollars:  Your premium dollars must be spent primarily on health care – not administrative costs.

What can it do for you? Care:  Covers Preventive Care at No Cost to You:  You may be eligible for recommended preventive health services. No copayment.  Protects Your Choice of Doctors  Choose the primary care doctor you want from your plan’s network.  Removes Insurance Company Barriers to Emergency Services:  You can seek emergency care at a hospital outside of your health plan’s network.

‘Obama Care’ President Obama = watch?v=DCQSGnZ0lTg watch?v=DCQSGnZ0lTg Why is it called Obama Care?  President Obama signed this law in 2010  This law was a major campaigning goal in 2008  Many Republicans are against this law because it has increased premiums (costs) for everyone in the country  The ‘political issues’ caused the government to shutdown in 2013

THOUGHTS? Do you think the Affordable Care Act will be successfully implemented and reach its goal of improving Americans’ access to health care? Why or why not?
