Weapons Control & Targeting Systems AIAA Aircraft Design Team 2 Eric Fuchs & Nancy Fung October 31, 2006 A/C Design Class

Introduction Weapons Control Link between aircraft and weapons Controls weapon release Targeting Systems Sensor & radars used to locate target

Stores Management Systems (SMS) Primary interface between aircraft and its weapons (stores) Provides necessary power and control to safely release weapons Tornado: Weapon Programming Unit (WPU) Weapon Control Panel (WCP-1) Pilots Control Panel (WCP-2) Pylon Decoder Unit (AAMU) Intervallgerber (IVG) Gun Electronic Unit (GEU) Weapon Programming Unit (WPU): The main computer of the SMS. A completely dual redundant computer for safety Critical inventory and release of all weapons Weapon Control Panel (WCP-1) for the weapons officer. An alpha numeric display 12 lines by 20 characters with soft keys to program the WPU Pilots Control panel (WCP 2) for control of Air to Air missiles and Guns Pylon Decoder Unit (PDU). Controls actual release of weapons and missiles Air to Air Missile control Unit (AAMU): Controls launch of Sidewinder missiles Intervallgerber (IVG): controls release of bomblets Gun Electronic Unit (GEU): Controls the 27 mm cannon on the aircraft http://www.smiths-aerospace.com/Products--/Images/Tornado%20Stores%20Management%20System.jpg

Fire Control Radar Lockheed Martin Searches, detects, locates, classifies, and prioritize multiple moving targets Target data (i.e., azimuth, elevation, range and velocity) automatically transferred to other platforms Used by Apache AH-64D Attack Helicopter http://www.missilesandfirecontrol.com/our_products/combatvision/LONGBOW/images/pic-product-Longbow1.jpg LONGBOW Specifications Range 8 km Frequency Ka band Modes Surveillance, Targeting, RFI cued, Terrain Profiling, Air Overwatch Weather Clear to Adverse Environments All battlefield obscurants Fire Control Radar = radar used to provide target information inputs to a weapon fire control system

LANTIRN ER Lockheed Martin (Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night Extended Range) Day/night/under the weather capability Altitudes from sea level to 40,000 ft Navigation & Targeting Pod mounted beneath aircraft Applications: F-14, F-15E, F-16C/D Navigation Pod: Contains a terrain-following radar and a fixed infrared sensor, which provides a visual cue and input to the aircraft's flight control system, enabling it to maintain a pre-selected altitude above the terrain and avoid obstacles. This sensor displays an infrared image of the terrain in front of the aircraft, to the pilot, on a Head-Up Display. The navigation pod enables the pilot to fly along the general contour of the terrain at high speed, using mountains, valleys and the cover of darkness to avoid detection. Targeting Pod: Contains a high-resolution, forward-looking infrared sensor (which displays an infrared image of the target to the pilot), a laser designator/rangefinder for precise delivery of laser-guided munitions, a missile boresight correlator for automatic lock-on of the AGM-65 Maverick imaging infrared missiles, and software for automatic target tracking. http://www.missilesandfirecontrol.com/our_products/combatvision/LANTIRN/images/pic-product-lantirn.jpg
