Rotating Base Model Assembly Instructions copyright Mechanical Kits Ltd. 2012

Contents of Rotating Base Kit Wooden pieces (⅜” cross-section): 2 X 8”, 4 X 7¼”, 1X 3¼” 1 X 2⅝” Green corner gussets: 2 cards Wooden dowel, 3/16” diam.: 3 X 2¼”, 2 X 1”, 2 X⅞”, 3 X ¾” Wooden dowel, ⅞” diam.: 1 X 2½” Large wheels: 3 Medium wheels: 2 20cc syringes: 4 Plastic tubing (1ft.): 2 Syringe holders: 2 Platform, 4” square: 2 Stirring Sticks: 1 Plus a small piece of sandpaper copyright Mechanical Kits Ltd. 2012

Using 2 X 8” and 2 X 7¼” wooden pieces construct a 8” square. Lay the pieces as shown in the diagram and glue both sides with green corner gussets, a total of 8 altogether. Notice one of the 8” pieces has a hole at its midpoint. Allow the corner gussets to dry before flipping the square over. copyright Mechanical Kits Ltd. 2012

Mark two measures of 2⅞” on each 8” side. Measure from the outside edge of the 7¼” sides. Using 8 more green corner gussets, glue the remaining two 7¼” pieces in place as shown below. copyright Mechanical Kits Ltd. 2012

Glue the 2⅝” piece into corner as shown. Note the orientation of the piece in relation to the centre members. Using a ruler mark the center members along the line of the diagonals from opposite corners. copyright Mechanical Kits Ltd. 2012

Glue the large wheel with the ⅞” hole onto the center members so that it almost covers all the marks. Put on one side to allow the glue to dry copyright Mechanical Kits Ltd. 2012

Mark the three 2¼” dowel pieces ¼” from one end and ¾” from the other. Glue the ¼” end into three of the holes of the platform that has its corners cut, as shown below. copyright Mechanical Kits Ltd. 2012

Connect the syringe plunger that has a hole ½” from its end to one of the uprights adjacent to the vacant hole. Glue a 1” dowel piece into the other platform and allow to dry. Ensure the 1” dowel protrudes ¾” on its top surface and then connect the platform to the three uprights up to the ¾” mark, as shown below. Do not glue the other platform in place yet, that can be done at the end. copyright Mechanical Kits Ltd. 2012

Connect the three ¾” dowels to the three holes in the large wheel and then glue the 3¼” piece onto two of them as shown below. Allow to dry copyright Mechanical Kits Ltd. 2012

Insert a ⅞” length of dowel into the center hole of the second large wheel and one of the smaller wheels Then glue the large wheels together and the smaller wheels together so that the dowel protrudes ⅜”, as shown below. Allow to dry copyright Mechanical Kits Ltd. 2012

Glue the remaining 1” dowel into the third hole of the 3¼” piece now connected to the large wheel assembly so that it stands upright. Then glue a piece of green cardboard onto the large wheel and the smaller wheel. It is very important that this is dry before placing the syringe holders in the position shown. copyright Mechanical Kits Ltd. 2012

The parts are now ready for final assembly. Insert the 2½” piece of ⅞” dowel into the wheel glued onto the center pieces of the base. Then position the platform assembly over the ⅞” dowel so that the platform with the cut corners rests on the large wheel. Place the large wheel assembly into the hole in the 2⅝” corner piece, orientated as shown below. copyright Mechanical Kits Ltd. 2012

Connect the “platform” plunger to the outer casing of the syringe and put that syringe into the syringe holder on the large wheel assembly. Connect the plunger with the hole ¾” from its end to the dowel protruding from the 3¼” piece, that plunger to its outer casing and connect the syringe to the syringe holder on the smaller wheel assembly. copyright Mechanical Kits Ltd. 2012

The 1ft lengths of tubing connect the two driving syringes to the final assembly. The “neutral” position is shown below. The plunger of the syringe attached to the larger wheel is fully closed. The driving syringes will be complementary e.g. the syringe “driving” the driven syringe on the larger wheel will be fully open. In this “neutral” position the second syringe attached to the smaller wheel is engaged to turn the platform through the critical point. The first syringe can then be extended. In this way the system achieves a total rotation close to 180˚ copyright Mechanical Kits Ltd. 2012
