Rules of Integers
Positive numbers are numbers that are above zero. Negative numbers are numbers below zero.
Adding Rules
Positive + Positive = Positive Example: Example: = 9
Negative + Negative = Negative Example: (-7) + (-2) = -9
Sum of a negative and a positive number: Use the sign of the larger number and subtract Example: (-7) + 4 = (-9) = -3 (-3) + 7 = (-3) =2
Multiplying rules
When you multiply + x + positive multiplied by a positive gets you a positive. Example: 3 x 2 = 6
- x + - x + When you multiply positive with negative you get a negative Example: (-3) x 2 = -6
- x - When you multiply negative with a negative you get a positive Example: (-3) x (-2) = 6
Subtracting Rules Negative – Positive =Negative Example: (-5) – 3 = -5 + (-3) = -8
Positive - Negative = Positive + = Positive: Example: 5 m- (-3) = = 8
Negative – Negative = Negative+ Positive = use the sign of the larger number and subtract (change double negatives to a positive) Example: (-5) – (-3) = (-5) + 3 = -2 (-3) – (-5) = (-3) + 5 = 2
Dividing Positives Positive ÷ Positive = Positive Example: 12 ÷ 3 = 4
Dividing Negatives Negative ÷ Negative = Positive (-12) ÷ (-3) = 4 (-12) ÷ (-3) = 4
Dividing Negative with a Positive Negative ÷ Positive = Negative Example: (-12) ÷ 3 = -4
Dividing a Positive with a Negative Positive ÷ Negative = Negative Example: 12 ÷ (-3) = ÷ (-3) = -4
