Latitude, Longitude, and Maps.  Cartography is the science of making maps.  Use of imaginary grid of parallel and vertical lines to give exact locations.
Word of the Day Nautical Mile: One minute of arc length of latitude or longitude at the equator, or 1852m.
Scientific models in the form of maps can be useful for finding locations & showing land formations on the Earth’s surface.
Longitude and Latitude
Aim: How do we locate positions on Earth? I. Coordinate System – assigns to every position on Earth a pair of coordinates (2 numbers) called latitude.
MAP READING Latitude and Longitude. LATITUDE  Imaginary lines running East/West  Measure North/South of the Equator (0 o )  Splits Earth into Northern/Southern.

Using Latitude and Longitude.  Relative location: describing the location of a place in relation to another place.  Absolute location: exact location.
Latitude & Longitude Lines. Latitude and Longitude ► The earth is divided into lots of lines called latitude and longitude.

Mapping the Earth: Objective: To demonstrate knowledge of how to locate places on the Earth using absolute location and systems of measurement.
World Space. Latitude & Longitude  We can divide the world up into regions the same way we can divide Canada.  The world is divided into four hemispheres.
Location To locate areas on Earth with precision, people drew a grid over maps and globes. One of the most important is the equator, which divides.

Presentation transcript:

Finding latitude and longitude co’ordinates When finding co’ordinates, latitude always goes first (north/ south before west/ east) Find Latitude lines directly north and south of the feature Look for the equator and Greenwich Meridian to work out N/S or W/E 30o 40o 50o 60o 70o

Work out the exact latitude co’ordinates E.G Imagine the space in between the lines is divided into equal divisions (usually 10) Work out the exact latitude co’ordinates E.G Repeat steps to find longitude co’ordinates 30oS 40oS 50oS 60oE 70oE

Latitude and Longitude using minutes On large maps there is wide spaces between latitude and longitude lines, when they increase in degrees of one so… Places like Roxburgh, Alexandra and Cromwell could have the same references but they are 10-40km apart To work out their precise location of places between lines, each degree is divided into 60 parts called minutes

Locating latitude and longitude by using minutes Divide the gap between lines into 60 parts. Start at the lower number with zero and the higher number will be 60 (30 minutes is always halfway) 8o 9o 5o R T 4o 3o

How do you write coordinates? 25o 13’= twenty five degrees and 13 minutes TASK ONE: How many minutes are equivalent to ¼ degree? How many minutes are equivalent to ¾ of a degree? TASK TWO: Work out the latitude and longitude coordinates including minutes for the South Island towns on your map
