Presentation of ChemXchange TEC-3 meeting on 04/09/2009 Brussels

The Project Based on BASS (a tailor-made sector-driven system in Norway) established in cooperation between EBA/CoBuilder There has been established a consortium consisting of SME Association within the construction sector (SME-AGs), RTD performers, technology suppliers and end users. The ChemXchange project will be supported through EU – “the Funding Scheme in FP7 “Research for SME Associations” (FP7-SME )”. Norwegian Contractor’s Association (EBA) is Coordinator. FIEC, UNIEP and GCI-UICP do ensure that the requirements of the constructions sector are highly focused and represents an important and highly effective vehicle for dissemination of the results from this project. Total budget: € EU funding: € Starting date 1 st January 2009 Duration: 3 years

ChemXchange – overall results The ultimate improvements of our proposed system compared to today’s existing tools include: One, complete sector-driven and SME adapted solution. Compliance with national and European chemical legislation. Centralized system management and decentralized use. Simplified chemical information distribution. Enhanced risk awareness and skills. significant reduction in management costs for the SMEs through easier chemical communication procedures. ChemXchange will be operated according to the principle that it should be accessed free of charge for small companies. All prices are to be set by a governing group of associations and contractors (steering group). The fees and licences cover the expenses.

ChemXchange – close co-operation with the industry ChemXchange – system development is based on input from:  Identification of relevant EU legislation  Implications of new legislation REACH  End user surveys, including:  Questionnaire – user of chemicals  In-depth interviews – user of chemicals  Questionnaire – supplier of chemicals  In-depth interviews – supplier of chemicals  Dialogue with providers of soft-ware for preparation of Safety Data Sheets (export/import of information)  Input from this activities will be the basis for specification of content and functionality of ChemXchange.

ChemXchange – key content

 In addition – following information can be relevant:  SDS for not hazardous chemicals  Technical information  Positive environmental labelling  Referance to legislation  Toxicological and ecotoxicological data  Life cycle analyses/estimates  Emission data to indoor environments  To be decided after further dialog with Construction Sector and their chemical suppliers.

ChemXchange – key features  Facilitate import of SDS from chemical supplier. Interface with soft-ware solutions for preparation of Safety Data Sheets  Translation of SDS information between different languages  Complete register of chemical products used in the enterprise and/or projects (Product inventory)

ChemXchange – key features  Chemical management system including f.ex:  Risk assessment and substitution  Exposure assessment and workers register  Safe use of chemicals  Generation and distribution of experience  Listing of unwanted substances  Safe and cost effective waste disposal  Historic data of chemicals used per enterprise/project  Quality assurance of Safety Data Sheets  Key features to be decided in further further dialog with Construction Sector and their chemical suppliers.
