How does my location on the Earth affect my life?

Two kinds of location Absolute location a place’s specific location on the globe. Use the imaginary lines on the globe Latitude/Longitude, equator, etc. Example: That city is at 52°N, 73°W Even a street address is an example of Absolute location

where it is in relation to other places Relative Location where it is in relation to other places Example: Milwaukee is north of Chicago, on the Western coast of Lake Michigan in the U.S.’s northern midwest

Where am I, exactly? Ancient Greek geographer Ptolemy created a grid system and listed the coordinates for places throughout the known world in his book Geography. Latitude and Longitude system not used until Middle Ages Written in degrees, using the symbol °.

Latitude Run horizontally (side to side). AKA parallels -equal distance from each other. Each degree of latitude is approximately 69 miles (111 km) apart (not exact because Earth is egg shaped). imagine them as the horizontal rungs of a ladder ("ladder-tude").

Degrees latitude are numbered from 0° to 90° north and south Degrees latitude are numbered from 0° to 90° north and south. 0 degrees– the equator, 90° north = North Pole and 90° south = South Pole.

How they work together To precisely locate points on the earth's surface, degrees longitude and latitude have been divided into minutes (') and seconds ("). There are 60 minutes in each degree. Each minute is divided into 60 seconds. Seconds can be further divided into tenths, hundredths, or even thousandths.

For example, the U.S. Capitol is located at 38°53'23"N , 77°00'27"W (38 degrees, 53 minutes, and 23 seconds north of the equator and 77 degrees, no minutes and 27 seconds west of the meridian passing through Greenwich, England).
