Uses of ICT in Business

Lesson Objectives To understand the advantages, features and uses of

CAD – Computer Aided Design The use of Computer Systems in engineering, architecture, kitchen design etc, to support the design of products. It can also cover the design of products such as packaging

Features of CAD Packages FeatureUse ZoomThe ability to zoom in and out of a design 2D and 3DThe ability to change the surface of the models from 2D to 3D RotationThe ability to rotate a 3D design so you can see the design from all angles ShadingCan add shading to a diagram to aid visualisation No need for PrototypingYou can create a design without having to build a model LayeringLayers can be used with each layer adding more detail, i.e. Layer of walls, electric circuits and plumbing WalkthroughInternal view in 3D / visit rooms in 3D. Allows a supermarket to visualise what the building will be like by testing out various layouts

Features of CAD Packages FeatureUse Costings Allows a database of prices of materials to be created. The program can explore the cost of different options in a kitchen plan. Hatching/RenderingCan use different finishes or materials. Can do what if investigation to see the effect of different finishes. Stress/strainAllows design features to be checked against requirements. By working out the weights of materials can avoid a later disaster.

Advantages of CAD You can easily store and transfer images/drawings via ICT such as to others working on project You can easily alter your image if there are any changes to be made You can manipulate images You can view images in 3D which is useful

Advantages of CAD You can scale images up and down You can use a variety of artworks to include diagrams such as trees, wallpaper Can produce a list of components automatically – which can be used to list dimensions Stress/Strain calculations allow you create designs that are safe.

Examples of CAD Producing Kitchens or bathroom designs for customers Used by architects designing buildings Used by landscapers to design gardens Producing designs for a component to be manufactured
