Membership Attract and retain Members –Keeping – and engaging – a current member is as valuable as bringing a new Entered Apprentice into the Fraternity. Leadership –What impact can good leadership have on attracting and retaining members?

Leadership Conference What Do Men Want...

Leadership Conference What Do Men Want... –Fraternity –To Be Useful –A Sense of Accomplishment

Leadership Conference What Do Men Want... –Fraternity –To Be Useful –A Sense of Accomplishment –Respect for Time

Respect for Time What does it mean to be respectful of someone else’s time?

Respect for Time What does it mean to be respectful of someone else’s time? –We’re all busy

Respect for Time What does it mean to be respectful of someone else’s time? –We’re all busy –This isn’t like the old days in Masonry

Respect for Time What does it mean to be respectful of someone else’s time? –We’re all busy –This isn’t like the old days in Masonry –Members – old and new – are balancing many, many priorities.

Respect for Time What does it mean to be respectful of someone else’s time? –We’re all busy –This isn’t like the old days in Masonry –Members – old and new – are balancing many, many priorities. –Being respectful of someone else’s time is important to me because my time is valuable. So is yours!

Dreaded Words The most dreaded four and a half words in the English vocabulary?

Dreaded Words The most dreaded four and a half words in the English vocabulary? –“Let’s have a meeting!!!”

Meetings Are Important Mass Communication –The efficiency of many people coming together to share information and ideas, solve problems and create opportunities. Manage expectations Initiate new members Run the business of our Lodge

The Worst 30 minutes of meeting material...

The Worst 30 minutes of meeting material... –... jammed into 90 minutes of rambling, perhaps disassociated conversations.

The Best “Hey – That was a good Meeting!” –5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, all day –A good meeting: a purpose a goal we were focused and we got something done –How long does it take to have a good meeting? That depends!!

Good Lodge Meetings Organization and Communication –Fundamentals of Good Leadership Meetings: –Stated Communications – the monthly business meeting of your Lodge. –Officers Meetings –Degree Meetings – EA, FC and MM. –Other Lodge Meetings

Some Help Minnesota Masonic Manual ORDER OF BUSINESS Subject to the By-Laws of the Lodge and the will and pleasure of the Master, the suggested order of business at Stated Communications is as follows: a. Ritualistic opening and pledge of allegiance b. Greetings and announcements by the Master c. Introductions of visiting brothers - Senior Deacon d. Community and social events - Junior Warden e. Opportunities for relief and assistance - Senior Warden f. Program of Masonic Instruction - Lodge Education Officer g. Final comments and closing Balloting, committee reports and other required business matters may be inserted at the Worshipful Master’s will and pleasure.

Masonic Meeting Leadership Meeting agenda –Officers meeting –Stated meeting Calendar template Degree night meeting templates –Some Lodges use Degree Directors, and these templates & communication / organization tips might be helpful to them

Make It Work for Your Lodge Meetings will be different for every lodge and may change for a lodge over time –Outreach and community giving –Pay the bills –Consent agenda items –What’s going on in the appended Masonic bodies.

Make It Work for Your Lodge The important work will be to tailor the agenda outline for your lodge Communicate to your membership about the meeting concept. –Get them engaged Coordinate / Integrate / Communicate calendar with Web site, news letter and other communication tools used in your Lodge

Change is Difficult And it’s not just about having the agenda or maybe even following it Set the tempo –Set the expectation that the meetings will start on time, run on time and then be done. –Keep to one meeting, minimize and control side discussions. –That’s what leadership is about. When the meeting is done, move on to the social, fraternal or brotherly attention issues, or retire to the outer lodge

Change is Difficult Some of these things are difficult, neigh on to frightening to some. But worthwhile in engaging your membership, old and new.

Materials Contact me: –Will provide you with copies of the PowerPoint and the draft agenda’s, calendar –And pdf documents.
