Mike and Betty Halliwell's nonprofit organization which collects and ships donated books to help Peace Corps programs - booksforpeace.org Books are mainly donations from schools in Greater Los Angeles; they cover a wide range of topics and usually are in excellent condition. What is Books for Peace?

What books does BFP have? BFP collects whatever donated materials are offered, if they seem likely to be wanted.

How does BFP work? Betty works with PCVs via to figure out what best fits the needs at their sites. Then the selected books are sent at no cost to the PCV or the receiving organization. Even if you are not an education PCV, you can still help a local school, library, or other program to get books.

Available Material English: K-12 language skills and literature, including integrated programs and fiction. Science: all levels of textbooks and a variety of materials focused on individual topics. Math: elementary and high school subjects. National Geographic: starting from Makabayan: World history, geography, economics, art. Reference: Dictionaries, thesauruses.

Have realistic expectations… U.S. science and math textbooks do not parallel the Philippines curriculum, but teachers find them useful resources. The BFP inventory changes constantly, depending upon what is donated and shipped. BFP is a small operation, so shipments may be delayed due to the volume of requests. Remember the mantra of “patience and flexibility”

Getting Started In accord with Peace Corps policy, BFP does not send books unless there is an official request from a host- country organization. To begin the process of working with BFP, and ask for the attachment with the standard instructions. The earlier in your Peace Corps service you get started, the better the prospects for success.

Three Basic Request Types “Resource Kit” “Sample of Sets Box” “Class Set”

1. “Resource Kits” Single copies of various materials focused on specific subjects to serve as teacher resources Four types of “Resource Kits” are available: Science/Math English Makabayan Library

2. “Samples of Sets Boxes” A Samples of Sets Box includes samples of items which are available in larger quantities, including class sets. Samples of Sets boxes usually focus on resources for teaching English language and/or literature, but a shipment of samples can be tailored for any number of different needs.

3. “Class Sets” Once the Samples of Sets Box arrives, the PCV and the teachers study its contents and decide whether their school needs a class set of any of them. If so, they can request that one or more “Class Sets” of specific books be included in a follow-up shipment.

Other Options These boxes have been developed to expedite BFP operations while conforming more or less to the Dep Ed curriculum. However, other requests and guidance will be welcome. There is no limit to what can be requested, but PCVs should help their colleagues who want to ask for “everything” or “anything” to focus on specifics.

Points of Contact To request books or more information, contact Betty Halliwell For a BFP testimonial, contact Rene and Neal Bierbaum (PCV Philippines, )
