What is Skype? Skype, A free software program that you can download from Skype.com that allows you to make free calls over the Internet to other Skype users over the world, through VoIP. You may notice Skype is now included with Microsoft Windows updates. Microsoft recently purchased Skype for 8.5 billion dollars. If you’re an avid Skype and Microsoft user frequently check support for program updates.

Why is it used? Skype is a fantastic free tool for online instant communication with friends, family, and coworkers. It’s the number one online communication tool in the world.  Keep in touch with people  Develop a closer relationships with your friends or your coworkers  Educational purposes

Skype Features Skype Phone Number Video Call Conference Calls File Sharing Instant Messaging

Skype Number [Your personal online number] This feature is not necessary if you are just using Skype online. You don’t have to sign up for a Skype Phone Number. For people to be able to call your Skype account from a phone, you need a Skype number to give to them. Receiving calls from phones doesn’t cost you anything but will charge the caller the same rate as if they were calling a real phone.

With a Skype Number (previously known as an Online Number), people can call you from mobiles or landlines and you can pick up the call in Skype. It’s perfect if you have friends, family or colleagues who don’t use Skype. Anyone can dial your Skype Number from any mobile or landline and you simply pick up the call on Skype.

Video Call You can make video calls for free using Skype. This help you to see the person you are talking to and allow them to see you too.

Conference Calls Twenty five people can engage in a conference call using Skype. This will help the workers and staff have group discussions with other staff from any location.

File Sharing You can easily send files over Skype to any of your Skype contacts.  There are no size limits for the file.  Consider local technology policies and bandwidth before sending files.  For security reasons, the recipient has to approve the transfer and the person has to be online for the file transfer to take place.

Instant Messaging In addition to talking with your Skype contacts, you can type messages to them while you are having a voice conversation or if you cannot talk to them at a particular moment.

Install Skype On a computer you can download Skype from:    Download and install from the app store on tablet, android, iPhone, and iPads Follow the Steps : 1.Go to 2.Click on the “Download” tab. 3.Click “Download now” 4.The next screen will be an install agreement. Click “I agree - install” 5.Click to Call will install a toolbar. Uncheck it for basic use. Creating a Skype Account Follow the Steps : 1.Open Skype on 2.Click on “Join Us” Create New Account 3.Create account window will appear were you should write: a.your Full Name b.Skype Name - Skype will give you suggestions based on your address. (this will be your login name) c. d.Password – Skype created e.Birthdate (required) f.It is not required to create a Skype Phone number to use the free online desktop application 4.Click the Box where is says “Yes, I have read and accept…” 5.Click Next Once you finish creating your Skype account, it will sign in automatically and you will see a “Welcome” page. Finish filling out the personal information by following the online screen instructions.

Adding a Contact Follow the Steps : 1.Click the “Add button” from your account in the desktop application window. 2.Type in the contact name and then click “Find” 3.When you find your friend, Click on his/her name and then click “Add Skype Contact” 4.Type a message to your friend so that they know who you are. When they receive the message they accept it, and you’re added to their contact list 5.Their contact will be added to your Contacts list.

Making a Skype Call Follow the Steps : 1.Click on the contact’s name that you wish to call. You contact’s Skype account has to be active to receive calls. Active users will have a green icon by their name. 2.Click on the phone button. 3.It will start ringing until your contact answers. 4.Once your contact answers you can start talking 5.To end the call, click on the red hang up button. Making a Conference call Follow the Steps : 1.Click the plus button then click “New Conversation” 2.Select the contacts that you want to add to the conference call. 3.Click on the green phone button. to begin the call. 4.To end the call, click on the red hang up button. Instant Messaging 1.Click on the person’s name 2.The chat bar is located at the bottom of the screen 3.Click on the paper clip to attach a file 4.Start typing your message in the box and click the send arrow or press “Enter”

Group Chat A group conversation allows you to send instant messages to two or more contacts simultaneously. You can do this by either creating a group from scratch, or by adding contacts to an existing conversation. Currently, you can add up to 300 contacts to one IM conversation. Anytime a member of the group sends an instant message, it will be received by all the participants, allowing multiple contacts to chat and share contacts and files with each other, all at the same time. It’s a perfect tool for keeping track on group projects with co-workers or planning events with family or friends.
