Warm Up: Goals and Objectives **Answer in complete sentences. 1.List at least three goals you would like to accomplish during your high school years Why did you choose these three goals?

Setting Goals and Solving Problems Objective: To help students develop the skill of writing quantitative goals and objectives related to their future plans.

Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction. John F. Kennedy Textbook page 144. Read about Marta. Textbook page Activity 186

In the Beginning Our goal was to answer three questions: – Who am I? – What do I want? – How do I get it?

How Do I Get It? Getting what you want differs from deciding what you want in one very important way: – It requires action. It is easier to fantasize about your future rather then build it. Devote this section of the class to discussing the process to building your future.

Tools for Solving Problems According to the The Road Less Traveled written by: M. Scott Peck there are four tools/techniques for solving problems: 1. Delayed gratification 2. Accepting responsibility 3. Dedication to truth or reality 4. Balance

1. Delayed Gratification Putting off the temporary joys of today in favor of lasting rewards in the future. This is difficult because the rewards of living only for the moment are more tangible.

2. Accepting Responsibility The opposite of putting blame on others. – Friends/parents/teachers

3. Dedication to Truth or Reality Wishful thinking…. has not shown to be effective.

4. Balance Which leads to being flexible. It is important to live happy in the moment – As long as you aren’t being self- destructive by doing so!

Setting Goals and Objectives A recipe for what you want: – Goal: The end product you want to achieve with a certain amount of time. (Make cookies) – Objective: Like ingredients, they are measureable. It is an action that will help you meet your goal and measure your success.

Always be Ready for Change! New beliefs/ValuesNew Dreams New Goals Growth or Change New goals as we grow. As our values change, our goals change. Reaching new goals leads to recognizing new values, and so on.

Setting Goals: Activity Look at the examples at the top of Activity 189. Activity 189: Choose 2 goals from the list and write three objectives for each. Activity 190: Re-turn to Activity 63 and review the statements about your desired lifestyle. Identify your 3 lifestyle goals and list 3 objectives to get to those goals. (ie: future career, future education, and current High School education.

When considering my goals of life, I have set specific long term, short term and personal goals in life.) Body Paragraph #1 Discuss your 3 long term goals Be specific as to what the goal is and how you plan to achieve it. Body Paragraph #2 Discuss your 3 short term goals.
