Chemical Properties - Basic Reducing Laboratory Preparation For personal protection, we need: Safety glasses  Lab coat  Dust respirator  Gloves - Basic Reducing Reactivity towards water/acid/alkali Reaction with NaOH forming white precipitate Reaction with dilute HNO3 Colourless NO gas is evolved and the solution turns from colourless to brown. Reaction with concentrated HNO3 Brown NO2 gas is evolved. And the solution turns from colourless to brown. Reaction with concentrated H2SO4 Pungent SO2 gas is evolved. And the solution turns from colourless to brown.

Chemical Properties Uses of MgBr2 - Magnesium bromide is used most often in the pharmaceutical (medical) world. Dihyropyrimidinoes are used in medications such as calcium channel blockers, and HIVgp-120-CD4 inhibitors. It also has been used as a tranquilizer(鎮定劑). Magnesium bromide when bonded to other functional groups has shown more practical uses other than catalyzing reactions. When bonded to an ethyl group it is used for regiospecific analysis of triglycerols. Magnesium bromide hexahydrate is being worked with to be used as a flame retardant(防燃劑).

Potential Hazard : Irritant Chemical Properties Interesting or special characteristics of MgBr2 Magnesium bromide (MgBr2) is water soluble and somewhat soluble in alcohol. It can be found naturally in small amounts in some minerals such as: bischofite and carnallite, and in sea water, such as that of the Dead Sea. Magnesium bromide can be synthesized by reacting hydrobromic acid with magnesium oxide and crystallizing the product. It can also be made by reacting magnesium carbonate and hydrobromic acid, and collecting the solid left after evaporation. An alternative route is adding magnesium to a solution of liquid ammonia and sodium bromide, then evaporating the solvent off and collecting the precipitate. Potential Hazard : Irritant
