What is Student Voice? Sharing our stories Rotation: What areas of Student leadership do you do well? What would you like to develop?

Deep Learning Assessment for Learning Learn to learn Student Voice

Deep Learning What is Deep learning? “An articulate, autonomous but collaborative learner.” Emma Sims SSAT Learning is the key, not teaching. Similar to the change of emphasis in lesson observations.

What makes a good leader? Acquiring the skills for student leadership

Should we be worried about students taking control? Student voice and leadership is about.. Encouraging students to take ownership and have a responsibility for some areas of school life. Its not about.. Allowing the students to completely run the school!

Why should students be leaders?

What are the qualities of a good leader?

Finding the leaders Think about how your school can select students with the best leadership skills but also encourage others to gain skills. Develop projects that will appeal to and benefit a wide range of students. Encourage any existing student leaders to train and be a good role model to others. Think carefully about how you select your students to be leaders.

Planning for more student voice Students as researchers to help planning e.g. Out of hours learning in the department Working with another group of students outside the lesson e.g. With a set of questionnaires or in an interview Working with students in the lesson – checking understanding Focussed observations Helping to evaluate teachers training – 3 month evaluations

Final Thoughts “The case is of Child. It is his present powers which are to assert themselves; his present capabilities which are to be exercised; his present attitudes which are to be realised” (Dewey 1908 ‘The Child and the Curriculum’)
