UNLEASH MICROHYDRO POTENTIAL IN EUROPE

RESTOR Hydro Project in Italy: looking for old mills! RESTOR Hydrowww.restor-hydro.eu2 Iulca Collevecchio APER REScoop : Italian National Workshop Bolzano, 8 th May 2013

 coordinator: ESHA  partners (11): Nettowatt (BE), HEB (SI), NTUA (GR), WIP (DE), FHE (FR), SVAF (SE), TRMEW (PL), Edora (BE), LHA (LT), APER (IT)  duration: June 2012 – June 2015  website: RESTOR Hydrowww.restor-hydro.eu3 General Info

 unrealized potential for small and micro hydropower generation exists in Europe’s thousands of historic mills, water wheels, inoperative hydropower stations, weirs and other lateral structures in rivers  repowering abandoned sites results in the generation of hydroelectric power, both for local use and for injection to the European electrical grid. This simultaneously leads to increasing electricity production from renewable sources, energy independence and grid stability RESTOR Hydrowww.restor-hydro.eu4 Starting points

Demonstrate the attractiveness of small hydropower as a local investment vehicle, bringing revenue to local communities and contributing to energy independence, while preserving our historical heritage and the environment. RESTOR Hydrowww.restor-hydro.eu5 Generale objective

 Cooperative model  cooperatives increase the bankability of restoration projects  small and micro hydropower cooperatives bring new dynamism to local communities Win-win strategy! RESTOR Hydrowww.restor-hydro.eu6 Innovative approach

 Mapping of the sites  RESTOR Hydro Map  Implementation of restoration programmes in 8 selected target countries: Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia and Sweden.  Encouraging and sustaining the creation of SHP cooperatives RESTOR Hydrowww.restor-hydro.eu7 Main tasks

 is a tool which provides authoritative information on the hydropower potential of historic sites, covering the entire EU-27 region.  it enables to identify the location and outline the characteristics of up to 50,000 sites, facilitating project development RESTOR Hydrowww.restor-hydro.eu8 The RESTOR Hydro MAP

HYDI database RESTOR Hydro enhances the Stream Map project, which gathers detailed energy, market and policy data into the HYDI (Hydro Data Initiative) central database, which is free of access to the public. The RESTOR Hydro project benefits from the information collected within the HYDI database; at the same time it contributes to the Stream Map initiative, providing detailed mapping of historic sites with high micro hydropower potential in the EU.

RESTOR Hydrowww.restor-hydro.eu10 The RESTOR Hydro MAP

 guidelines on how to establish small and micro hydropower cooperatives with a community shares ownership  guidelines for SHP refurbishment (technical aspects, administrative issues, financing opportunities)  update of Stream Map project HYDI database (energy, policy, market) RESTOR Hydrowww.restor-hydro.eu11 Other deliverables

So far:  ≈ 500 mills mapped!  ≈ 10 possible sites for restoration programs identified  involvment of environmental associations (Legambiente), small HP companies spacialized in mills restoration and cooperatives (Retenergie) RESTOR Hydrowww.restor-hydro.eu12 Italy!

RESTOR Hydrowww.restor-hydro.eu13 Italy! Looking for OLD MILLS campaign: Help us to find and map old mills and other sites!

Thank you! RESTOR Hydrowww.restor-hydro.eu14 Contact: Iulca Collevecchio & Sara Gollessi APER – Associazione Produttori Energia Rinnovabile –
