MONTANA WRIGLEY & SIERRA RYALS Graves Disease

What is Graves’ Disease? An immune system disorder that results in the production of thyroid hormones Causes physical and neuropsychological signs and symptoms Most common form of Hypothyroidism

In what way is Graves Disease Autoimmune? Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins (TSIs) bind to and activate thyrotropin receptors, causing the thyroid gland to grow and the thyroid follicles to increase synthesis of thyroid hormone

Symptoms Insomnia Hand tremor Hyperactivity Hair loss Excessive Sweating Heat intolerance Diarrhea Nervousness Breast Enlargement in Men

Treatments The purpose of treatment is to control the overactivity of the thyroid gland. Antithyroid Medications Radioactive Iodine Surgery With radiation or surgery you will need to take replacement thyroid hormones for the rest of your life. This is because the treatment destroys the gland completely.

Additional Information More common in women than men Onset during early adolescence No cure About 30% to 50% of people with Graves Disease will also suffer from Graves’ Ophthalmopathy (A protrusion of one or both eyes)
