Congratulations! Thank-you for playing…

Why are these tip sheets so important?  They focus on specific skills that need additional support (home connection)  For students to engage in daily reading at home, students must be successful at independent reading-

Now, what if we encourage the daily readers to read an additional 10 minutes a day?

10 Truths about family Involvement…..  ALL parents have hopes and goals for their children.  Parents differ in their abilities or resources to help their children reach those goals.  Parents are the central contributor to a child's education.  Involvement must be seen as a legitimate element of education and deserves equal emphasis.  It is an ongoing process, not a series of events.  Successful programs help families guide their children's learning from PK to HS.  Parents are more likely to become involved when:  They understand that they should be involved  They feel capable of making contributions  They feel invited by the school PTA parent-involvement/

Continuum

Introduction to skilled tip sheets in conjunction with Marcia Tate’s strategies…strategies  Look over and discuss the 14 skills (that are in tip sheets) for developing reading  Go through list and brainstorm which areas your students are struggling with the most.  What skill do you feel your struggling students need most?

Let’s take a look at the videos/tip sheets….. Go to Look under: Community & Families Pick Family Literacy videos (English or Spanish)

Explore videos

Scavenger Hunt, look at the videos and activities. Find as many of M. Tate's strategies as you can!

Find the tip sheet that you would like to use….  How easy will this be for your families to do?  Watch the video (11 minutes)  Make notes of how you could share the importance of this skill with your student’s family Consider the video you just watched. Is this something you can share for parents to do at home? Share ideas about how you can introduce this to parents during parent/teacher conferences.

Let’s discuss their use….  P/T Conferences  Look over Effective P/T Conference sheet  Discuss and Review the Tip Sheet-6 week monitoring sheet  Decide on focus skill  Review the form, how to introduce and discuss.  Discuss using an assessment tool that can monitor that focused skill Marcia Tate mentions: People remember 95% of what they are able to teach to someone else: 10% of what they say 20% of what they hear 30% of what they see 50% of what they both see and hear 70% of what they say as they talk 90% of what they say as they do a thing (our tip sheets facilitate this at home)

How to help families keep the routine…routine  Suggest that they set a time during the day that will focus on using these activities  Encourage families to keep in contact with you  Give ideas on how to use them on “the run”  Share ideas that you or people you know have done with their children
