Georgia Department of Education Homework and Study Habits Parent Engagement Program Workshop Template Please remember that you can adapt all aspects of this workshop to fit your individual school(s) and community Add your name, title and contact information to the slide as the presenter (first and last slide) Introduce the workshop, yourself and welcome all in attendance Ask parents if they had a smooth transition getting to your room and document/address challenges if there are any.

Objectives: Ask Questions ● Listen ● Observe ● Understand IDENTIFY common homework challenges IDENTIFY learning style via multiple intelligence test Ask Questions ● Listen ● Observe ● Understand MAP out study habits and learn tips for success IDENTIFY mapping strategies for organization State what the objectives are for this workshop.

Identify Common Homework Challenges Ask parents what are some of the challenges they face when it comes to helping their child with their homework.

Multiple Intelligences Test Figure out your learning style! Administer the Multiple Intelligences Test to everyone and ask that they complete it on behalf of their child to identify what their learning style may be. Inform parents that they are also welcome to complete a separate survey on themselves to see if there is a correlation to their learning style and that of their child. Review the results of the test and allow parents to talk about their results and how they feel their child learns best. Ask parents if they were already aware of their child’s learning style? Ask what are some of the advantages and disadvantages of their child’s learning style? Allow for repsonses. Figure out your learning style!

Learning Styles Visual (spatial): You prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding. Aural (auditory-musical): You prefer using sound and music. Verbal (linguistic): You prefer using words, both in speech and writing. Physical (kinesthetic): You prefer using your body, hands and sense of touch. Logical (mathematical): You prefer using logic, reasoning and systems. Social (interpersonal): You prefer to learn in groups or with other people. Solitary (intrapersonal): You prefer to work alone and use self-study. Tell parents that it is imperative that they identify what their child’s learning style is. This can save both the parent and child from a lot of frustration in the future. Read the bulleted points and ask parents which one do they feel best identifies their child’s style of learning. Review the seven multiple intelligences in children handout.

Elementary School State that we are going to begin by learning how to help our youngest learners with developing good homework skills using their child’s learning style…

Eager Beavers Check for understanding - Be sure your child understands new assignments before he or she starts working on them. Guide, but don't correct - If your child needs help, offer ideas that can help them sort out the problem, but don't give them the answers. Build in rewards or incentives to use with children for whom "good grades" is not a sufficient reward for doing homework. A general rule of thumb is that children should do 10 minutes of homework for each grade level. Therefore, first graders should be expected to do about 10 minutes of homework, second graders 20 minutes, third graders 30 minutes, and so on. cont’d. Eager Beavers Read everything that’s sent home –At this age, children need guidance and help with what’s required for each assignment. Don’t hesitate to seek out tutoring -If you find that your child is consistently struggling in a particular area. It is much better to seek help early than waiting. Suggest that your child take momentary breaks, especially if you find that assignments are long in length. This will help your child avoid burn-out. Example of a Learning Style for a Spatial Eager Beaver Prefers fill in the blank information Using color coded words makes retention easier Flashcards, flipcharts, or props are preferred Use a highlighter to separate key points Underline or circle key words Encourage note taking and writing games Make outlines of everything **Best test type: Diagramming, reading maps, essays, and demonstrating a process **Worst test type: Listen and respond test Read the bulleted points and stress the best and worst test types. Explain that this is one example of how to apply a learning style. Parents can assist a child who has this learning style with homework by: Using flashcards to help them remember multiplication problems such as 1X1=1, 2X2=4, 3X3=9, etc. Highlighting key words their child needs to remember from a reading assignment or for a spelling test Drawing out illustrations on paper to explain the main idea or key points their child needs to remember

Middle School Stars Study groups are often a good strategy. Your child may benefit from studying with one or two classmates. Encourage your child to divide the homework assignment into "What I can do myself" and "What I need help with.“ Enforce that neatness is important. Children often rush through assignments quickly so they can finish sooner and move on to the next thing on their agenda. Read the bulleted points and stress the bold terms for emphasis

cont’d. Middle School Stars Establish rules about the use of their cell phone during study time. This can be a major distraction; therefore, it would be wise to prohibit the use of it during homework time. Remind your child that it’s ok to say no if they are being asked to engage in extracurricular activities and forms of entertainment with their friends that may interfere with study time. Keep things in perspective and caution your child against setting goals that are too difficult to meet. Read the bulleted points and stress the bold terms for emphasis. For the second bullet indicate that it’s important and essential to map out time for both extracurricular activities and forms of entertainment that do not conflict with homework assignments.

Example of a Learning Style for a Linguistic Middle School Star Use word association to remember facts and lines Repeats facts with eyes closed Prefers watching videos Enjoys participating in group discussions Use audiotapes for language practice Prefers reading to themselves out loud **Best test type: Oral exams or writing a response to a lecture they heard **Worst test type: Reading passages and writing answers about them in a timed test Read the bulleted points and stress the best and worst test types. Explain that this is one example of how to apply a learning style. Parents can assist a child who has this learning style with homework by: Purchasing books on a CD or itunes for your child to listen to in addition to reading the book Having study group sessions at your home so your child can learn from others and engage in group discussions Turning off all sound devices and encourage your child to read out loud to you

High School Scholars Before starting homework assignments, make sure your teen has everything they need---books, paper, pencils/pens---to cut back on distractions and unnecessary breaks Help your teen learn time management skills by developing a schedule and sticking to it, no matter what Monitor you teen’s study habits and encourage them to study in short bursts because cramming is not the answer Block out distractions (i.e. telephone calls, facebook, television) Review these tips and tell parents to be very observant. If they see where there is a need for improvement in one of these area, then they should take immediate steps to help their teen make the necessary changes.

High School Scholars Look out for "senioritis" - a drop in motivation and, consequently, grades, that is sometimes experienced by seniors by helping them stay motivated Check your teen’s schedule for appropriate classes and make sure they are on track to enhance their next step(s) after graduation Make sure they get plenty of rest before test days which may require the removal of electronic devices from their room Take advantage of free tutoring and study group sessions! Review these tips and tell parents to be very observant. If they see where there is a need for improvement in one of these area, then they should take immediate steps to help their teen make the necessary changes.

Example of a Learning Style for a Bodily-Kinesthetic High School Scholar Studies best in short blocks Learns well in lab classes Prefers role playing Enjoys studying with others Use memory games and flash cards to retain information Learns well on field trips **Best test type: Short definitions, fill-ins and multiple choice **Worst test type: Long test and essays Read the bulleted points and stress the best and worst test types. Explain that this is one example of how to apply a learning style. Parents can assist a teen who has this learning style with homework by: Encouraging them to take a short brain-break after every twenty minutes of studying Participating in role play to help their teen with learning new literature (ie. Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet) Helping their teen prepare for vocabulary tests by using flash cards with the word on the front and definition on the back

Day Literature Math Science History Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Connected to the idea of a study routine is the concept of a homework chart. This type of visual system tends to work very well with children of all ages, but especially between the age of 9-12. The chart might look something like this. You have also been provided with a handout to fit the needs of your child whether they are in elementary, middle or high school. The subject areas can be changed upon request. Encourage your child to fill in all homework by the date that it is due. This can be used to accompany the agenda book/syllabus that are sent home. You can also place this on the refrigerator to help with organization and as a reminder, especially while in elementary or middle school
