Moon Phases. I. The Moon 1.The moon rotates once on its axis in the same amt of time as it revolves around Earth. (every 27.3 days) 2.This is why a day.
Vocabulary: revolve, orbit, phase, reflect, waxing, waning
Moon Phases. Half of the Moon is always lit up by the sun. As the Moon orbits the Earth, we see different parts of the lighted area.
Positions of the Sun and Moon affect the Earth
Moon Phases. How it works! Half of the moon is lit up at one time The moon revolves around the Earth We see different sections illuminated depending on.
BIG IDEA: The changing positions of the moon, Earth, and sun cause the phases of the moon, tides, and eclipses!!

Phases of the Moon Standard 1 Students will understand that the appearance of the moon changes in a predictable cycle as it orbits Earth and as Earth rotates.
 The word "month" comes from “Moon.”  Long ago, a month represented the time it took to complete one cycle of the changing Moon phases (~ 29.5 days).

Mr. Stanish’s Class. HALF OF THE MOON IS ALWAYS LIT UP BY THE SUN. AS THE MOON ORBITS THE EARTH, WE SEE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE LIGHTED AREA.
Phases of the Moon The Moon and Sun are in synchronous rotation- that means both rotate at the same rate. So the same side faces the Earth at all times.

moonlanding-vin-kids/ Which of the following best describes a neap tide? A. there are no high or low tides B. weak tides that are not as high as usual C. strong tides that are higher than usual When do neap tides occur? A. when moon and sun are aligned B. when moon and sun are right angles to each other C. during a new moon

 When the bright part is getting bigger, the Moon is waxing.  When it is getting smaller, the Moon is waning.  When the Moon is more than half-lit, it is called a gibbous Moon. (big)  When the moon is less than half-lit, it is called a crescent Moon.

MODELING THE Earth ’ s MOON PHASES - Mini Lab Problem: To create an ACCURATE model of the Earth-Moon system and the phases of the moon, Materials- Each student will receive only 8 chocolate cookies with white filling (Oreo ® ). Safety- FOOD ALLERGIES, wash hands before and after!!, wait for permission, sharp toothpick Procedure: 1) Use the cookies to make the models of the following phases of the moon: a) New moonb) Waxing Crescentc)First Quarter d) Waxing Gibbous e) Full Moonf) Waning Gibbous g) Last/Third Quarterh) Waning Crescent 2) Separate your cookies carefully, so that ½ of the cookie has ALL of the frosting and the other ½ of the cookie has NO frosting. *Use the side of one cookie to “cut away” some of the white filling to create each of the moons. 3) Using the provided placemat, place your completed cookies in the correct order. 3) Put the cookie models IN ORDER in relation to the Earth and SUN, use the sun as your guide. 4) You need MY approval of your model before you have permission to “munch on the moon”. 5) Draw in and label each of the moon phases that you created on the back side of the sheet. CLEAN UP YOUR AREA!!

Phases of the moon as seen in the Northern Hemisphere

Position 1Position 2Position 3Position 4 New Moon Completely (or almost completely) dark. Waxing Crescent A small sliver of light on the right. First Quarter (or Half) Moon The right half of the Moon is light. Waxing Gibbous Three quarters of the right side of the Moon is light. The light is in the shape of a humpback (which is what the word “gibbous” means!) Position 5Position 6Position 7Position 8 Full Moon The entire Moon is bright. Waning Gibbous Three quarters of the left side of the Moon is light. Third Quarter (also Half) Moon The left half of the Moon is now light. Waning Crescent A small sliver of light now appears on the left side. What each of the cookies should look like with the correct lunar (moon) phase.
