What is an Enrolled Agent? Enrolled Agents (EAs) are tax practitioners with technical expertise in taxation, who have earned the privilege and are federally authorized to prepare taxes and represent taxpayers before all administrative levels of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) including audits, collections and appeals.

A Profession You Can Rely On There are two things that are certain in life: Death & Taxes The Internal Revenue Tax Code is continually changing, and there will always be a need for Enrolled Agents. Those who file tax returns can depend on the Professionalism of Enrolled Agents.

Enrolled Agents are in High Demand Enrolled Agents are needed in small and large public accounting firms, law firms, corporate accounting departments, state departments of revenue, investment firms, banks and in private practice. Competent, knowledgeable tax professionals are valued more than ever due to continuing changes to the Tax Code. Enrolled Agents are respected among taxprofessionals.

What Makes Enrolled Agents Unique? Enrolled Agents are the tax experts. Enrolled Agents are regulated by the Department of the Treasury to represent taxpayers before the IRS for audits, collections and appeals. Enrolled Agents hold a federal license and have an unrestricted right to represent any taxpayer in any state. Enrolled Agents are held to a stringent Code of Ethics. Enrolled Agents must fulfill continuing tax-centric education requirements.

Career Opportunities Available For Enrolled Agents Enrolled Agents have a broad range of opportunities in corporate, individual, or government employment. Enrolled Agents can start their own businesses. Enrolled Agents may practice full- or part-time. Enrolled Agents have unlimited earning potential.

Requirements to Become an Enrolled Agent Applicants must: Pass either the Special Enrollment Exam (SEE) or have specific employment experience with the IRS to be licensed. Pass a background check.

IRS Experience Can Substitute for the Special Enrollment Exam The IRS employee must have five or more years of experience with the IRS. IRS experience must be in a position that regularly interprets and applies the Tax Code.
