Standards/Objectives Target audience: 4 th to 5 th grade. Indiana Standard “Locate Indiana on a map as one of the 50 United States. Identify and describe the location of the state capital, major cities and rivers in Indiana.” Indiana Standard “Use maps and globes to locate states, capitals, major cities, major rivers, the Great Lakes, and mountain ranges in the United States.” Objective 1: Given this activity, students will be able to identify each state in this region. Objective 2: Given this activity, students will know all the capital cities of the four states in the powerpoint. Objective 3: Given this activity, students will pass all the quizzes and test at the end of the activity.

HEY KIDS! I am little Abe, and today I will be sharing some fun facts about some states in the Midwest! We will go over Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan. Watch the video below to receive further instructions on this activity!

Indiana became a state in 1816 and is called the Crossroads of America.

The capital is Indianapolis and the two major rivers are the Wabash and the Ohio River.

State Bird State Flag State Flower Hey Guys! Just a few fun facts about Indiana and we are done with this state. The state bird is a cardinal and the state flower in the peony. The state flag has a gold torch on a blue background.

The next state we will be going over is Illinois! It became a state in 1818 and is nicknamed “Land of Lincoln”.

The capital of Illinois is Springfield. Be careful not to confuse it with Chicago. Chicago is the “Windy City” and has a population of about 2.7 million people.

State Bird State Flag State Flower Alright! The state bird for Illinois is the Northern Cardinal and the flower is a Violet. The flag has a bald eagle on it with a ribbon in it’s mouth. It has the same animal as the United States flag.

The third state is Ohio which became a state in 1803! The capital is Columbus and is nicknamed “The Buckeye State”.

Ohio comes from the Iroquois Indian word meaning "good river" or "large river.”. Also, Ohio is the home to seven former Presidents of the United States.
