-Leonardo da Vinci wasn't just an incredible artist He was also an: -inventor -scientist -mathematician -engineer -writer -musician -and more…

Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452 and died on May 2, He was Italian. He lived during the time of the Renaissance da Vinci" means "of Vinci", the town where he was born. -He hated war, and was a vegetarian

Because Leonardo's interests were so varied, he was easily distracted and had trouble completing his works Many people think that he was the most talented person ever to have lived He was left-handed

Renaissance = Rebirth or new beginning (14 th to 17 th century) Transformation in time from the dark ages (when past knowledge was lost) to the modern era It was a rebirth of education, science, art, literature, music, and a better life for people in general. Renaissance Man = A person with many talents & considered an expert in many things Example: Leonardo da Vinci

The Mona Lisa is perhaps the most well known painting in the world. It took da Vinci about ten years to paint Mona Lisa's lips.

The Vitruvian Man is a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci It shows the relationship between human proportions and geometry

- He spent six years or more on the Last Supper, one of the most famous paintings in the world.

He drew pictures and designs of his inventions Many of da Vinci's drawings and journals were made in his pursuit of scientific knowledge His journals were filled with over 13,000 pages of his observations of the world.

-His aerial screw design is one of the coolest designs that he ever sketched in his notebooks. -Working much like a modern helicopter, this flying machine looks a lot like a giant whirling pinwheel. -Unfortunately, it never worked….but it was a cool idea

While working in Venice, the "water city", in 1500, da Vinci created his scuba gear for sneak attacks on enemy ships from underwater. Send men to the bottom of the harbor in diving suits and let them cut holes in enemy ships.

The idea of a parachute is to reduce a person's speed when falling so that they would survive. Da Vinci, who was fascinated by the idea of human flight As da Vinci wrote in his notebooks, it would allow a man 'to throw himself down from any great height without suffering any injury.

-He hated war and loathed the idea of creating killing machines -He needed money to support his household and found it easy to convince his wealthy patrons that such machines would help them defeat their enemies. Perhaps it was for the best that none of da Vinci's war machines ever actually got built.

-He designed an giant crossbow. -When constructed it was not able to fire successfully

While working in Milan, Leonardo invented his ultimate war machine: the armored tank Driven by the muscle power of eight men, the armored tank was a turtle-like moving shell with 36 guns poking out of its sides.

- Da Vinci was fascinated by birds. -He created a machine that would allow humans to soar through the air like birds. -A machine that flies by flapping its wings by imitating the flapping-wing flight of birds, bats, and insects.

Flight was of particular interest to da Vinci. He studied the flight of birds and created plans for flying machines Hundreds of years before the Wright brothers took their first flight (1903) Unlike some of his other inventions, his flying machine was built and tested. While it may have been able to fly in the sky, it could not get itself off the ground.

Too Busy to Finish -Leonardo Da Vinci took things slow. -He loved to observe, study, and plan before beginning a project. By the time he started, he would have too many ideas to focus on one thing. -He was known for leaving his paintings unfinished. -He spent his time on more important things…his inventions.

“As long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other.” “The time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men.” “Poor is the pupil who does not surpass his master.”
