Presentation transcript:

Today we will analyze the meaning of complex words using our knowledge of prefixes and base words. analyze= investigate What will we use today? What does analyze mean? What will we analyze today? What are we going to do today?

What was the last movie preview that you saw? In the word preview, we have the prefix “pre” which means before. We all know that a preview comes BEFORE a movie. Preview means to view before.

Complex words A base or a root word combined with an prefix and/or a suffix. Combined=put together

Base Word: A word that can stand alone, but can change meanings when a prefix is added. Example: View I would like to view the movie at home. (watch) I would like to preview the movie at home. (watch before) What is a base word? Why is view a base word?

Prefix: a word part that is added to the beginning of a base word to create a new word Example: We saw the preview for the new Transformers movie. Non-Example: When I went to watch the movie, I ordered a pretzel. What is a prefix? Why is “pre” a prefix in preview? Why is “pre” not a prefix in pretzel?
