Western Europe and the Five Themes You will need to look at the political map of Europe (RA22) in your textbook while you take notes. Questions on the left; responses on the right.

Let's talk about MOVEMENT… (of people, goods, and ideas) Why do you suppose Europeans were able to travel throughout Europe and around the world? What land feature seems to be the biggest barrier to movement? The Europeans never had trouble crossing the Alps. Why not? What forms of transportation do you suppose run through the mountain passes and the mountains themselves?

Let's talk about REGIONS Which is easier: Memorizing 45 countries or 4 regions? NORTHERN EUROPE – 7 countries – Near the North Sea – Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland – The United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) – Republic of Ireland

SOUTHERN EUROPE – 9 countries – On the Mediterranean Sea – Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece – Vatican City, San Marino, Andorra, Malta, Cyprus WESTERN EUROPE – 10 countries – From the Atlantic to the Alps – France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands – Germany, Switzerland, Austria – Liechtenstein, Monaco, Malta EASTERN EUROPE – 19 countries – Between the Baltic and the Black – Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland On the Baltic Sea – Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Belarus, Macedonia Landlocked! – Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Yugoslavia, Albania On the Adriatic Sea – Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria On the Black Sea

Let's talk about LOCATION What is the westernmost country of Europe? What is the easternmost? What is the northernmost? What is the southernmost? Which continent lies north of Europe? Which continent lies south of Europe? Which continent lies east of Europe?

True or False: Europe and Asia share the same landmass. Why is Europe considered its own continent? Which body of water separates Europe from Africa? What body of water separates Europe from Asia? What ocean lies to the west of Europe? What ocean lies north of Europe? Does Europe lie above or below the Equator?

Which European countries lie on the Equator? Which European countries might have to wear woolen clothes (warm clothes) in wintertime? Which countries are close to the North Pole?

Let's talk about INTERACTION The way people interact with their environment. Europe has 7 major rivers: – The Thames, Seine, Po, Rhine, Danube, Dnieper, and Volga. The Rhine, Rhone, and Danube rivers begin in the Alps. Why? What city was built along the Thames River? Can you name some European cities on the seacoast? (minimum 5)

Let's talk about PLACE How would you describe the shape of Europe? How many countries are in Europe? What is the biggest country in Europe? What is the smallest country in Europe? Is Iceland a part of Europe? – Why is that strange? Is Cyprus a part of Europe? – Why is that strange?
