R. Henderson 2/03/08 Lesson # 5 2 In pagan usage it meant "to appease, to conciliate to one's self, to make a god propitious to one." Herodotus says, "The Parians, having propitiated Themistocles with gifts, escaped the visits of the army." Weust The word “propitiation” itself means “that which propitiates” ---. Its also means “place of propitiation.” Our Lord Jesus Christ is both the propitiation and the place of propitiation. Marchbanks That which propitiates is Christ himself. The idea is “the one who paid the price” or “to make satisfaction for” This is the satisfaction of God’s character of righteousness, holiness, & justice which must be satisfied so as to make payment sufficient for the redemption of every human being on the planet. V. Peterman Definition of Propitiation

R. Henderson 2/03/08 Lesson # John 2:2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. Christ is the propitiation Whose sins is Christ the propitiation for ? Other observation about this verse ? Christ the propitiation for our sins propitiation for our sins propitiation not for our only propitiation for those of the whole world

R. Henderson 2/03/08 Lesson # John 4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. This is what God’s love is all about We did not love God first God loved us first His love was demonstrated by sending his Son His Son was sent to be the propitiation for our sins Christ the propitiation for our sins

R. Henderson 2/03/08 Lesson # 5 5 See Hebrews 9:1-5 Hebrews 9:5 and above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat; but of these things we cannot now speak in detail. mercy seat – place of propitiation Christ as the place of propitiation How is the “mercy seat” used in the Old Testament see Exodus 25:10-22 and Lev. 16:11-14

R. Henderson 2/03/08 Lesson # 5 6 Romans 3: being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; Christ as the place of propitiation God displayed (Christ Jesus) publicly as a propitiation in His blood displayed - to set before someone. In the NT, only in the mid. protíthemai. to propose, set forth or before the eyes, publicly Vine Verses about how Christ was displayed on the cross: Heb 12:2, Phil. 2:8, Gal. 6:12 and Act. 2:23

R. Henderson 2/03/08 Lesson # 5 7 Christ is propitious in His very nature Hebrews 2:17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. propitiation – propitious – a verb For this reason it was an obligation for Him in all things to be made like His brethren, in order that He might become a compassionate and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, with a view to offering that sacrifice for the sins of the people that would perfectly meet the demands of God's justice Wuest Hebrews 8:12 “For I will be merciful to their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more." merciful – propitious - an adjective because I will be merciful in the case of their unrighteousnesses, and their sins I will in no wise remember anymore. Wuest

R. Henderson 2/03/08 Lesson # 5 8 Summary Redeemed – The one who has been redeemed is one who has had the debt paid in full and that payment has been recognized and acted upon by the captive / debtor and by the ones holding him captive. V. Peterman Reconciled – By the death of Christ on its behalf, the whole world is thoroughly changed in its relation to God. But God is never said to be reconciled to man. The world is so altered in its position respecting the holy judgments of God through the cross of Christ that God is not now imputing their sin unto them. The world is thus rendered savable. L. S. Chafer Propitiation - this is the satisfaction of God’s character of righteousness, holiness, & justice which must be satisfied so as to make payment sufficient for the redemption of every human being on the planet, the payment sufficient to effect the forgiveness of the whole world,& to declare each one righteous (justification). God was completely satisfied in this regard in the death of Jesus Christ. V. Peterman
