Corinthians Lesson 5 “…God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation,” 2 Cor. 5:18

Introduction In 2 Cor. 5:18-21, Paul writes of the word of reconciliation and the ministry of reconciliation The Word is the gospel of Christ The ministry is the special service commanded by God to the apostles to proclaim the gospel to a lost world Today, we are called to obey, live by and teach the same gospel to others

The Gospel Reveals That God Reconciled Sinful Man Through Jesus’ Death 2Co 5:19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 2Co 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

What Does It Mean To Be Reconciled? 1. katallasso (G2644) "to change, exchange" (especially of money); hence, of persons, "to change from enmity to friendship, to reconcile." With regard to the relationship between God and man, the use of this and connected words shows that primarily "reconciliation" is what God accomplishes, exercising His grace towards sinful man on the ground of the death of Christ in propitiatory sacrifice under the judgment due to sin,… From Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words

The Gospel Of Christ Is That Word Of Reconciliation In it, we learn man has sinned against God becoming His enemy God, in His grace, mercy, love and justice, sent Jesus to die as a propitiation, blood sacrifice, for our sins In this sacrifice, God provides just punishment for all sin He also provides forgiveness to all sinners who express obedient faith according to His plan of salvation

Our Sins Make Us God’s Enemies Who Deserve Punishment Isa 59:2 But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear. Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Gospel In God’s Mind Before Creation Eph 3:10 so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places. Eph 3:11 This was in accordance with the eternal purpose which He carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord,

Animal Sacrifices Can Never Take Away Sins Heb 10:3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year. Heb 10:4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Jesus Is The Atoning Sacrifice To Satisfy God Concerning Sin Joh 1:29 The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 1Jn 2:2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.

The Gospel Reveals That God Reconciled Sinful Man Through Jesus’ Death Rom 5:6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Rom 5:7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. Rom 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

The Gospel Reveals That God Reconciled Sinful Man Through Jesus’ Death Rom 5:9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. Rom 5:10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

The Gospel Reveals How We Must Respond By Faith To Be Reconciled To God Mat 26:28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. Act 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

What Is Involved In The Ministry Of Reconciliation? The apostles were Divinely sent out and guided by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the gospel to both Jews and Gentiles They were uniquely qualified for the task They were Christ’s hand-picked special ambassadors whose Word was essential for the lost to hear and obey

Ministry of Reconciliation Given To The Apostles 2Co 5:18 Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 2Co 5:19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

Ministry of Reconciliation Given To The Apostles Mar 16:15 And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Mar 16:16 "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.

Ministry of Reconciliation Given To The Apostles Act 1:8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth."

The Apostles Are God’s Chosen Ambassadors To The World 2Co 5:20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 2Co 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Ministry of Reconciliation Continues Today Today, as we have opportunity, Christians must seek to teach people the gospel without addition or subtraction Like the apostles, we seek to live according to the gospel looking to please God and not reflect badly on His Word

Ministry of Reconciliation Continues Today 2Ti 2:2 The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

Ministry of Reconciliation Continues Today Col 4:5 Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity. Col 4:6 Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.

Knowing The Fear of The Lord and Judgment We Persuade Men 2Co 5:9 Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him. 2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

Knowing The Fear of The Lord and Judgment We Persuade Men 2Co 5:11 Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest to God; and I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences. 2Co 5:12 We are not again commending ourselves to you but are giving you an occasion to be proud of us, so that you will have an answer for those who take pride in appearance and not in heart.

Knowing Jesus Loved All and Died For All We Live For Him 2Co 5:13 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are of sound mind, it is for you. 2Co 5:14 For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; 2Co 5:15 and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.

Knowing Jesus Loved All and Died For All We Live For Him 1Jn 4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1Jn 4:11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1Jn 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.

Being New Creatures We Do Not Live or Judge According To The Flesh 2Co 5:16 Therefore from now on we recognize no one according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer. 2Co 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

New Life Begins When We Are United With Christ Rom 6:3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Rom 6:4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

New Life Continues As We Submit To Christ’s Word Eph 4:22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, Eph 4:23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, Eph 4:24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

Why Not Begin This New Life In Christ Now? 2Co 6:1 And working together with Him, we also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain-- 2Co 6:2 for He says, "AT THE ACCEPTABLE TIME I LISTENED TO YOU, AND ON THE DAY OF SALVATION I HELPED YOU." Behold, now is "THE ACCEPTABLE TIME," behold, now is "THE DAY OF SALVATION"--

“…God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation,” 1.What is the word of reconciliation? 2.What is involved in the ministry of reconciliation?
