Objectives of Session Provide context to the implementation of residential care regulations in BC. Address how compliance with the regulations support the work of BC Care Providers. Raise awareness of new online training program that supports the promotion of the health, safety and dignity of those in care. 2

Context In BC Licensing Officers carry out inspections of a broad range of facilities under the Community Care and Assisted Living Act The CCALA governs both publicly subsidized and private pay facilities Seniors residential care is increasingly providing care to a very frail and complex mix of clients 3

Opportunities for change 1997 review of Community Care Licensing in BC recommended province-wide Licensing Officer training New Act was implemented in 2004, following extensive consultation Ombudsperson Report on Seniors Care recommended province-wide Licensing Officer training 4

Residential Care Regulations in BC ▀ When the CCALA was introduced a commitment was made to also review the regulations (then called the Adult Care Regulation) ▀ Following extensive inter-ministry consultation as well as consultation with stakeholders, the regulations were updated in 2009 ▀ The renewed Residential Care Regulation now also governs child/youth residential care (formerly in Child Care Licensing Regulation) 5
