Let’s Make a Movie How to Create a Movie from a flipcam video (Adapted and Shared with permission from Erin Mayer)

Storyboard Before starting the video process, students need to use a storyboard to create a plan for each scene Minimum of 3 scenes  many short scenes vs. 1 or 2 long scenes

Before You Upload Your Video Clips Create a desktop folder  Store EVERYTHING in this folder: video clips, movie projects, audio clips, pictures, etc.

**Video clips will open in Flip software window close this window Upload Your Flip Videos – Step 1 Insert camera into USB port

Upload Your Flip Videos – Step 2 Find your video clips under My Computer Rename each video clip (right click on video clip) Drag each clip to your desktop or flash drive folder

Convert Your Videos Flip cameras take video in the MP4. Movie Maker currently requires AVI. Use a free file converter (codec) to convert your Flip videos to AVI format before importing them into Movie Maker  Any Video Converter  Prism  Pazera

Create Your Movie Drag a video clip to the video section of the timeline Click and Drag clips to change their position in the movie Video Clip DRAG

Saving Your Movie Project Be sure to save your movie project to your folder

Reviewing Your Movie Play your movie at any time by clicking the Play button on the movie screen

Trimming Video Clips Place your cursor on the timeline over the clip you would like to trim Trim the clip from either end

Splitting a Clip As the clip is playing, click the split button when you would like the clip split

Special Effects Change movie view to StoryBoard

Special Effects: Video Effects and Transitions In the Task pane, select Video Effects or Video Transitions under the Edit tab

Special Effects: Video Effects and Transitions Drag desired effect between 2 video clips Delete an effect or transition by right clicking on it and selecting delete

Titles and Credits In the Task pane, select Titles and Credits under the Edit tab Choose where you would like to add a title or credit page Change fonts and animation when you enter your text

Audacity: Importing Music Select Open under the File tab  Choose the mp3 file you would like to import *Music from itunes must be burned to a cd and then ripped as an mp3 before it can be imported into Audacity.

Audacity: Recording Audio Plug your headphones into a USB port Select the record button and speak *Select play to listen to your audio

Audacity: Saving Your Project Save your project to your folder

Audacity: Editing Audio Highlight the audio section you would like to preserve Select the Trim option under the Edit tab  All audio except for the highlighted section will be removed

Audacity: Adding Effects to Audio Highlight a section of your audio Choose your effect from the effect tab If you don’t like how the effect sounds, undo the effect under the Edit tab

Audacity: Exporting Audio Export as a WAV file to your folder

Importing Audio to MovieMaker Select Import audio in task pane Choose the audio clips from your folder that you would like to import

Adding Audio to Your Movie Drag an audio clip to the audio/music section of the timeline Click and Drag clips to change their position in the movie

Finishing Your Movie CRITICAL STEP Select Publish to this computer in the task pane Save your finished movie to your folder Your movie will save as a Windows Media file

Troubleshooting Checklist 1. Movie File Format is incompatible  Convert MP4 to AVI with a conversion software (codec) like Any Video Converter 2. Movie won’t play in Windows Media  Finish your movie to show it in WMP 3. Movie software doesn’t look right  Make sure students are not using Flip software 4. Movie Maker project has red X’s instead of clips  Save all video, audio clips and pictures in your desktop folder

Troubleshooting Checklist 5. Students are unable to find their video clips  Teach students a standardized way to name, and save clips  Ex. A_Miskimon_Per1_Cells – saved in DESKTOP folder. 6. Movie project files saved on flash drives won’t work  Flash drives have been problematic 7. Movie was started in Vista and now it won’t work in XP  bummer
