Technology in Healthcare…it’s about time Patient Safety initiatives (BMV, BPOC) to decrease the medication errors that originate at the point of Care 7 out of 15 Measures hospitals must meet to satisfy Meaning Use in 2011 involve Medication administration – Bar coding is essential for tracking dispensed medication According to HIMSS – 65% of US Hospitals are expected to implement HIT for the 1st Time between 2011-2012 Brigham Young University study showed 80% reduction in administering drugs and documentation errors as a result of bar coding technology

© 2010 Datalogic Scanning - Confidential Information Admitting – Main admitting and E/R admitting. The activity where the Medical chart and wristband identification wristband are created. During the admitting process patient data is captured, a barcode on the back of Drivers license can import name and address without the risk of human error. Bedside - Bedside scanning and electronic medical records are the primary initiative in hospitals today, Bar coding procedures will ensure patient safety and the 5 rights (Right Patient, Right Drug, Right Dose, Right Route, Right Time) Labs – Ensure the proper specimen is collected, the correct tests are performed, and the right results are delivered to the right patients as quickly as possible. • Tell phlebotomists which specimen to collect with a simple scan of the patient’s wristband • Create a specimen label at the patient’s bedside, guarantee correct identification and coding for the proper lab procedures • Record specimen bar codes including those required forblood samples • Log steps in testing • Automatically upload information into the laboratory’s system and EMR every step of the way, for real-time access throughout your facilities Surgery - In operating rooms, scanners allow nurses to scan inventory prior to and after the operation procedure. Also, location of surgical instruments and equipment can be captured for easy tracking. After surgery the instruments are scanned again to ensure a complete count then tracked from operating room to sterilization Department Sterilization (SPD) – Surgical instruments post surgery are sent to the basement for sterilization , once cleaned they are put back into kits, bar coded and placed back into surgical inventory. Blood bank – With bar coding, a blood can be tracked from storage to its final destination bedside and at the same time automatically update the blood pack inventory. Radiology – Accuracy of records such as X-rays or ECG’s can be quickly labeled and identified to avoid serious risk of errors © 2010 Datalogic Scanning - Confidential Information
