Leif Eriksen and the Vikings were the first Europeans and were the first to settle temporarily here in 1000 AD. Henry Hudson unsuccessfully sought the Northwest Passage. French explorers such as Jacque Cartier and Robert de LaSalle settled the eastern river valleys.
