Examples of Two-Step Equations a)3x – 5 = 16 b) + 3 = 12 c)5n + 4 = 6 d) – 6 = 4
Steps for Solving Two-Step Equations 1.Solve for any Addition or Subtraction on the variable side of equation by “undoing” the operation from both sides of the equation. 2.Solve any Multiplication or Division from variable side of equation by “undoing” the operation from both sides of the equation.
Helpful Hints? Identify what operations are on the variable side. (Add, Sub, Mult, Div) Identify what operations are on the variable side. Ex. 1: Solve 4x – 5 = 11
Ex. #2: Solve 28 = 12b + 4
Try These Examples 1.2x – 5 = = 3y (-x + 5) = 68
Ex. 3: Solve x/3 + 4 = 9
Ex. 4: Solve 7 = d/9 + 4
Try these examples! 1.x/5 – 3 = = c/ r/3 – 6 = 2
m + 8 = -4 Ex. 5: Solve
-17 = 3 + x Try these examples! -12 = - x
Quick Review: x – (- 3) = 5x – (- 3) = 5 x – 5 = - 8x – 5 = x = 24-2x = = x – = x – 7

Questions / Main Ideas / Vocabulary Notes / Answers / Definitions / Examples / Problems Topic: To solve multi-step equation in one variable Name: Date: Chapter #, Section #: 2 – 3Period: Essential Question: Essential Question: Which properties would best help me find the solution to multi-step equations? Don’t Forget: What if you have like terms on the same side of the equation??? 15 = 2n – 3 – 4n -2(n – 3) + 5n = 36
What about this type of equation? You are the host - a.k.a. ‘X’ In what order do people leave a party? – –Enemies (get rid of them to avoid trouble) – –Acquaintances (after mingling with everyone, they usually leave early) – –Friends (they hang out with the host a little longer) – –Family (if attending, they will stay to the end to help clean) With Multi-Step Equations it can be hard to know where to start…. pretend it’s a party!
Identify all the Party-goers ACQUAINTANCE FRIEND FAMILY HOST The Door!
12 7x + 5x - 12 = 48 12x - 12 = x = 60 x = 5 7x + 5x – 12 = 48
-20 10x = x +6x + 20 = 80 10x + 20 = x = 6 4x +6x + 20 = 80
Your Turn: 1. 8x x – 2 = x x – 2 = x + 3x – x + 9 = = 5x x
