Designing a map layout Purpose of map Audience Map elements

Creating a map layout Define the layout page Add layout frames and set their properties Add graphics Create layout templates Print the layout

Defining the layout page Size Orientation Margins Grid Zooming in and out on the layout page

Defining frames View Legend Scale bar North Arrow Chart Table Picture -each component in the layout has its own corresponding frame - add components using the Frame Tool

Creating a frame Choose one of the Frame tools Draw a rectangle for the frame on the layout page Layout1 Start End Set the properties for the frame

View Frames Contains the view on the layout page You can place any number of view frams in the layout Move and resize frames Double click inside the view frame to display View Frame properties

North Arrow frame North arrows are contained within frames in the layout. When you create a north arrow frame you select a style of north arrow to place on the layout. You can also choose an angle (in degrees) that the north arrow should be rotated.

Text and other graphics Use the drawing tool to add graphics such as neatlines, boxes, and other shapes Add text for titles and other descriptive information

Working with map elements Select Move Resize Group Ungroup Align

Layout template Save any layout as a layout template Use the layout design as the basis for other layouts Use EMPTY frames (views, tables, etc.) for the different map components When the layout template is used, any view/table/etc. can be assigned to the empty frame

Creating a layout template Choose a layout - Layout\use template -choose the desired template

Save layouts as template Layout\store as template type a name for your template select an icon, OK Your new template will be added in the template manager
