DIY Engine management system: Take full control of your car Ryan Ueltschi Eastern Kentucky University Department of Technology : NET Program For the final capstone presentation this slide will change to: All Caps Title Presenter’s Firstname Lastname Affiliation (such as EKU, Dept. of Technology, NET program)
OUTLINE This presentation will give a brief overview of my project. It will explain the presented problem and solution as well as the motivation, assumptions, and future work. Pictures will be included for further understanding of the work I have completed.
MOTIVATION My automotive interests mixed with my technology and electronics interests. I wanted to challenge myself I wanted to further my knowledge in general electronics and automotive electronics. I needed an engine management system for my car. Multiple slides may be used for motivating different aspects of the problem that is being solved through this technology or device
INTRODUCTION My project covers both fields of Electricity & Electronics and Computer Systems I have been researching in plan to build one of these specific systems for well over a year Electronic components needed Wiring diagrams Sensors Software
INTRODUCTION Essential Theory: Construct the physical system Create a wiring harness Install software on laptop Install firmware on system Wire in additional needed sensors Install complete system into car Tune
PROBLEM STATEMENT When an automobile’s engine becomes highly modified, the factory issued engine control unit (ECU) becomes insufficient for the engine’s requirements.
PROBLEM STATEMENT Sub Problems Fuel trim adjustments Timing adjustments Idle settings Sensors
Assumptions To build: the user will have a working knowledge and/or willing to educate themselves in electronic components, electricity, soldering, printed circuit boards, wiring, and slight advanced workings of a computer.
Assumptions To use: the user must know general car engine knowledge and how they work and what the engine will need at a given point in time Can hire someone to do the final tuning part.
PROPOSED SOLUTION In order to find a solution to my problem I had to decide on an EMS Research, research, research Build one myself Buy a MegaSquirt DIY EFI kit from www.diyautotune.com Buy the other components needed specifically for my car Download/install software Assembly Testing and troubleshooting
Parts List All from diyautotune.com DB37 solder cup connector for MS3X - $5.00 MegaSquirt Wiring Bundle - 23" Long - $15.00 MegaSquirt - III MS3X Expansion Card - $90.00 MegaSquirt - III w/PCB V3.0 - Unassembled Kit - $365.00 MegaSquirt 3X Wiring Bundle - 23" long - $18.00 64 pin connector from mouser electronics - $20

RESULTS
RESULTS A fully functional standalone Engine Management System
CONCLUSIONS I am now able to incorporate a customizable engine management system in my car to monitor, data log, and make adjustments as needed. Individual Learning: Time Management Project Planning Increased knowledge in general electronics and automobile electronics Soldering skills Engine management/tuning
FUTURE WORK Building these for future cars Knowing how to tune electronic fuel injection engines, to help myself and others Adding Bluetooth module Connecting with an android device Contact: ryan_ueltschi@mymail.eku.edu - Plan for 3-5 audience questions ahead of time
