Computer Peripherals What are computer peripherals? Any device that can be hooked up to a computer other than the standard input-output devices (monitor, keyboard, mouse). Name four examples of computer peripheral devices: speakers, microphones, printers, scanners, digital cameras, and modems. In order to run a peripheral, what special software package will your computer need? A driver, which is usually included with the peripheral at purchase time.

Input: Keyboard Where did the layout of the keyboard come from? It was borrowed from the typewriter with a number of new keys added. Do Apple and Windows computers have the same type of extra keys? A keyboard for a Windows computer has different extra keys than one for an Apple computer. What special key does a Laptop computer have, which can be combined with other keys to replace the missing keys? Fn key (functions key)

Function keys: What is the purpose of the F1 key? F1 is most often used to access the Help file for a program.

Numbers row: How many characters can you find on each number key? Two characters on each key How can you access the upper character symbols on a number key? It can be accessed by holding the SHIFT key down while pressing the key. Does the backslash key have a standard position on the keyboard. No! sometimes you will find it at the end of the number keys, before the Backspace key. Sometimes it is above a rectangular Enter key. Or it may be to the left of the Enter key.

Alphabet Letters What does QWERTY mean? The name comes from the order of the letters on the first row of alphabet characters. QWERTY: This arrangement of the letters was inherited from the typewriter. Why was the layout of the alphabets changed in the first type writers? With the first typewriters, the typists had trouble with the mechanical keys jamming each other because the typists could strike the keys faster than the keys could get out of each others' way. So the letters were arranged to slow down the typists' speed.

Explain the following functions? Delete: Erases the character just to the right of the cursor. Home: Moves the cursor to the beginning of the current line. End: Moves the cursor to the end of the current line. Page Up: Moves the cursor up the displayed area one screen's worth. Page Down: Drops the displayed area down the page one screen's worth.

Numeric Keypad Explain what will happen if I turn on the number lock button? the number keys on the numeric keypad respond as numbers. Explain what will happen if I turn off the number lock button? the number keys are navigation keys, using the alternate markings on the keys.

What should happen if I turn on the Caps Lock button? When the Caps Lock key is on, pressing any alphabetic key will result in an upper case (capital) letter.

Shift If I combine the shift button with an alphabet key, please explain what will happen? You will get an upper case letter.
